And who can forget the Perth and the Houston, who took the fight to an entire Japanese invasion fleet, with the Japanese firing 78 torpedos at the two ships, there could only be one outcome. Survivors had to endure years in a Japanese POW camp.

I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food
A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking

I heard it said that the Japanese records showed the Zeros had used up most of their ammunition strafing the ship as Sheehan kept firing and so were unable to strafe the sailors floating in the water, saving their lives. That was new information which confirmed he was not just brave, but saved lives, which justified the VC. If so, that's a great result.
Excellent. Obviously a reliable source.![]()
As I understand it, a VC had to be approved by the RN admiralty, and there was no way they were going to approve such an award to a sailor, particularly one from the colonies.
I remember photographing the family at Cerberus when they began the push to have Teddy's actions recognised.
Just a pitty his sister isn't around to see the award. At least she got to launch HMAS SHEEAN.
Peter.
Well that is a great Honour in it's own right. An honour indeed for a "lowly" Ordinary Seaman. Beats Admiral's wives, politicians & Misc.other rabble. I wonder whether the shipyard will now paint in a Maroon Patch after it's name?![]()
Just found this.
You RAN Bods will probably have read it, but to me it makes interesting reading for the mention of how 13 Sqdn Lockheed Hudsons facilitated the survivor's rescue
My Late Uncle John was with 13 Sqdn & not long after Armidale, was shot down over the Celebes Sea in flames & presumed KIA. Aged 21. WAG. Reading that about the 9 a/c that supported Armidale, I naturally wondered if his a/c was part of that group. Apparently Armidale nearly blew some of their a/c out of the sky with a mistaken identity with one shot from the 4" gun. Happily they didn't. In the end the whole Sqdn was lost in those early days & reformed with another Hudson Sqdn.
