Thread: Teddy Sheean VC at last

This is great news BUT lets not jump the gun just yet - while the news reports are that he is to receive the posthumous award, it is at this stage is only a recommendation - noting that the rules still exist the prevent the retrospective award of such awards. So lets hope it goes through and the VC is awarded.

Despite quite a number of heroic acts, worthy of the award of the VC, since the creation of the RAN, not one of these acts has gained the appropriate VC recognition they deserve, so lets hope this all happens and some of the other acts also gain recognition in the future.

For some reason acts of heroism by the RAN do not seem to have gained recognition of the other services. The RAN has long recognised this wrong doing and is part of the reason that more and more ship's have been named after these heros as a means of giving recognition of their deeds where the those in authority have failed to do so. Lets also hop that with this, the rules related to retrospective awards are also changed.

Good that it is said new evidence has been uncovered, including Japanese military records, which confirm details of what happened and justify the long overdue award.

If the Governor General knocked this one back the Boston Tea Party would look like a picnic. His Excellence David H will swiftly do as instructed or start a revolution or at least brown eyes if he goes near any former navy boys or girls

What a Selfless Guy,eh? This has been going on for ages but I'm glad to see he has got his just Recognition of his Bravery. It won't do Teddy any good or get him a good table in a Restaurant but I think he would be pleased at last. A lot of C-19 shirkers could take this example to heart. Or maybe they won't.

When I read that Scomo was due to make an important announcement I immediately thought "Hello we've been attacked by China" but this was better news.

I also thank you Teddy Sheehan. The lad was only 18 years of age on enlistment. From the Japanese reports of the action it apparently also recorded how much ammo was left on the planes. That is a bit weird.

Not enough to continue strafing the crew already in the sea so his action may have saved more lives while they were concentrating their fire on Teddy.

This apparently goes to the Queen as it will probably be the old VC not the new one. Edit - I see they have recommended the new VC - dont see how as it was not in place back in 1942 but doesn't matter a VC is a VC.

This quotation sticks in my craw as if Gallantry, Bravery & Valor only pertain to the Army & RAAF.

While Mr Sheean may seem deserving on the face of it, Professor of History at the University of Tasmania, Stefan Petrow, said of Australia's 100 VC recipients, not a single one was from the Navy, which does not weigh in his favour.

Nor is it fair Prof, we were involved in a World War with all services taking part. What a silly bloody comment you made.

Remember Cpl Mark Donaldson, Cpl Ben Roberts-Smith, Cpl Daniel Keighran, Cpl Cameron Stewart Baird?


In my opinion what did they do that Sheehan didn't, except their actions were land based & they had backup. It took Sheehan to have big balls like the above mentioned but seemingly open to unfriendly fire & he didn't **** off when the going got tough. Not saying the Army blokes did but it was a very exposed & different warfare. Hell, I dive for cover when I hear a .22 Short go off 20 km away.
