    Japanese Imports

Does anyone have any experience importing a Range Rover (classic or P38) from Japan? Looking for a reputable and reliable import agent, approximate total cost, and wondering what mods I should expect to make it AU compliant.

I am not in Australia, but just as general info: I have been involved here in Thailand awhile ago when those cars were still current, or just over 5 years old. The Jap models do not vary very much from other markets, mainly the lights and on some of them, the alarm systems. I would have thought that by now most of those models that you mention have been sold by now because of the Jap licensing system.

All the ones that I have seen have been very low mileage cars, but to bring then into Thailand they had to be cut in half and imported as parts. I have a photo somewhere of a P38 with just 50k on the clock cut in half. Enough to make you cry!

I have been looking into importing my old Discovery into Australia when I move back there, hopefully next year. It can develop into a can of worms if the correct procedure is not followed. I do not know any agents, but "Caveat emptor"!

The Internet is awash with advice:

If it's not a personal import (a vehicle that you owned in Japan for over a year) it'll need to comply with the other import regulations:

    Import options

Don't think that Range Rovers are importable under RAW/SEVS.

It might get in under the pre-1989 rule, but I'm not sure if that's still in place.

Most shipping companies would be able to assist.

We moved a car from Japan to the UK and then, a year later, on to Australia and it was all pretty straightforward because the shippers have done it a million times.
