Thread: Huge fire on Fraser Island

I’ve been following this for the last three weeks or so as we have a week booked on the island.

It appears a couple of young fella had a camp fire in Zone 8 (no open fires allowed) and was either left in-attended or it got away from them.

I believe a second fire has started which isn’t related to the original.

Between fires and dingos three of the four zones we are booked in are closed.

We leave for fraser on the 27th, hopefully the fires are out.

Talking to our neighbors who have a house at orchid beach putting the fire out has had some issue....

Off course it is a little hearsay

Apparently water bombing helicopters have been refused permission to suck water out of the fresh water lakes.

And as the island is world heritage listed water bombing from the main land with retardant isn’t allowed either.

Interesting that the community at orchid beach are proactive in maintaining firebreaks reducing fuel load between houses amd fire break which has mean the fire has threaten them. Maybe because the land is crown or control by parks??

Some land around townships is freehold. Most of the Island is National Park, protected under the Nature Conservation Act, 1992, and the Recreation Areas Management Act, 2006, to the low water mark.

Actually, they have been evacuated.

Fraser island tourists have been evacuated to the southern end of the island as firefighters battle a massive month-old bushfire on two townships.
The fire is burning on multiple fronts 1.2km north of Cathedrals Beach and heading south-southwest, the Department of Environment said on Sunday.
“Rangers are preparing fire lines around the townships of Happy Valley and Cathedrals,” a spokeswoman said.

For more than six weeks Fraser Island has been troubled by fires and the latest blaze has resulted in a “Leave Now” order issued to campers at Cathedrals on Fraser.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services say there’s the bushfire “conditions are getting worse” near Cathedrals at Fraser Island.

The dingo-fenced camping ground has self-catering cabins, permanent canvas tents, powered and unpowered campsites and is sheltered behind the dunes 6 km north of the famous Maheno Shipwreck.
The fire is travelling from north of Lake Bowarrady, in the vicinity of Awinya Road, south towards Cathedrals on Fraser.
It is expected to impact the camping ground by dusk and have a significant impact on the community, QFES says.
The “Leave Now” advice was the second warning issued in an hour on Saturday.
Just before 1.30pm the QFES also released a “Stay Informed” advice for a large bushfire travelling from north of Lake Bowarrady in the vicinity of Awinya Road south towards Happy Valley.
“People in the area will be affected by smoke, which will reduce visibility and air quality,” QFES said in a statement.
“Properties are not under direct threat at this time.”

Bushfire warning level: ADVICE


Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) advises there is a bushfire on Fraser Island.


You need to keep up to date and decide what actions you will take if the situation changes.


Currently as at 6.00pm a large bushfire is in the vicinity of Lake Bowarrady and travelling in a southerly direction towards Happy Valley.


Cathedrals on Fraser is now closed. Travellers are advised to check the QPWS website for updates and travel advice as other camping grounds and roads in the area may be closed.


People in the area will be affected by smoke, which will reduce visibility and air quality.
Properties are not under direct threat at this time. Call Triple Zero (000) immediately if you believe you or your property is under threat.
