CRAYFISH IS TOILET PAPER ALL OVER AGAIN!

Mad Panic buying On $20 crayfish. It's toilet paper all over again, People are getting angry as shops have no stock, and employees being abused.

Media again has started this, the 50% off is what gets the buyers going. Coles and Woolies are the winners getting free advertising.

They're Only the cheap Small WA crayfish being offered that have been sold for many years for $20 around Christmas. All the hype of cheap seafood as China is not buying crays. The Large Tassie or SA crays arn't 50% off!

But why let the truth get in the way of a good story

Just like meat is supposed to get cheaper, yet to really see it.

It seems to me that maybe there is a large domestic market for crays that is under utilised in Australia.........In a similar vein a large amount of our prime beef is exported and never meet the Australian market where the supermarkets stock old dairy cows.

Western Rock Lobster (Panulirus Cygnus) are not the same as Southern Rock Lobster (Jasus Edwardsii) which are endemic to SA, Vic, Tas, NZ, southern WA and the south coast of NSW.

The legal minimum size for WA lobster is (sustainably) smaller than SRL's and the price.per kilo has been about half that of SRL's since the Chinese live market opened up with the advent of the 707 in the 1970's.

Yes, small Western RL's have been in the supermarkets before, for $20 odd dollars each in the past.

Don't think I would like to wipe my nether regions with a crayfish.......
I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking

My wife got all excited about these media reports so I pointed out that southern rock lobster can't be sold at $20 because they have to be selling at $30 before it's economic to go out and catch them.

    thanks for that info.
Just like ALDI are advertising lobster tails with garlic butter, I tried them last year and they were Pacific lobsters if I recall and the size of 2 bites.

Even at $20 a pop these small size A crays from WA are highly overpriced/overrated seafood.
I can get good sized endeavour or king prawns for less than $20 a kilo and I there is no way one of those little crays is any heavier than 450 to 500g so in reality you are paying $40 a kg for something that isn't as good to eat as prawns or even a nice bit of fish.
I fished professional for crays here in the West for many years so I have a pretty good idea of what they taste like.
The WA crays are better than the painted or green tropical lobsters But they pale in comparison to the Southern rock lobsters.

Don't knock it until you try it, as they say. Yer never know. Well maybe you have?

We have struck the same All stock (supposedly ) gone in 10 minutes flat & "don't know when we are getting more" they say'. Coles & WW should think first about their staff getting the abuse from angry customers before having them subjected to this ****. It is not what they go to work for.
