In addition the date of Australia Day sometimes raises brows. Indeed, in the History of New South Wales from the Records it’s noted that Arthur Phillip makes no mention in his report to England of the ceremony on 26 January 1788. And, it wasn’t until 7 February that the whole colony was formally assembled in Port Jackson, and Arthur Phillip was appointed Governor.

Interesting as my 1980s was rather its a holiday unlike Anzac day .... "It wasn’t until 1946 that the name ‘Australia Day’ was adopted, and the ‘Australia Day Council’ was appointed to oversee its celebration."

    Happy every day Aussies

So I get it is seen as Foundation Day - especially for NSW, but we do need to acknowledge it remains a day of mourning for many as well. Certainly has nothing to do with becoming Australia.

The very first “Australia Day” was held on the 30 July 1915 to support the war effort as a national day to stir up patriotic feelings.

Time we find a date we can truly celebrate being Australian (“one and free”) - as the original Australia Day committee envisaged - and not to recognise NSW being founded as a British Penal Colony.
The real fist Australian was possibly 45,000–50,000 years ago. The day is interesting guess I assume

Australia became a nation on 1 January 1901, when the British Parliament passed legislation enabling the six Australian colonies to collectively govern in their own right as the Commonwealth of Australia.
Sure. Let's just let the current crop of politicians choose, or even better, the current opinion on twitter. Here in Victoria we celebrate Grand Final Day, even when it doesn't happen here ( covid ), because a politician wanted to appease the trade union movement. Melbourne Show Day, or Cup Day, were fine for generations, but a politician cancelled those for his own gain. That what you want, Bob? Every National day, changed on the whim of a so called leader? How about Mao day? Stalin day?
Traditions are a part of every decent culture. Only weak, totalitarian, empty cultures seek to change them. It's called cancel culture nowadays, but Orwell wrote about it 70 years ago. The soviets rearranged history. The Chinese are doing it right now. Why do we need to follow those aresholes? Australia is a great country, or a least it was. People fought for it. You saluted the Flag yourself, in a cause you and I didn't believe in at the time, but you swore, so you did, because you swore. I still believe in the oath I took, even though I don't believe in the politicians. I didn't believe in them then either.
This current raft of cancel culture is despicable, but it won't last. it will be the socialists next, and I guess they will be welcomed by people with no grasp of history. If you don't believe me, take a look at the the good old USA, and Kamala Harris, the new POTUS. She is one piece of work.

Oh, one more thing; try getting on a plane overseas anytime soon. Virus?? Sure. Believe that and you'll believe anything.

Rant, sure, but I'll go away now.

'Sorry day' could also be a public holiday, you can reflect whilst enjoying your activities, as most people are just happy to score a day of and don't take in what the day actually reflects.

You really should stay away from certain social media sites. They quite frankly do not tell the truth.
I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking

Interesting to see how we have evolved. Back in the day no one cared what it was called, as long as it was a holiday, and you could get a beer. Now, everyone wants to get in the act. We ARE a weird mob, alright.

I say we should let the descendants of anyone who was here on the 26 January 1788 have a postal vote to determine if this is an appropriate date.

This includes First Nations and First Fleet descendants.

Then we need two holidays - a day for when we became one and free as Australia (not a British Penal Colony) and a day for when we recognise and celebrate our First Nations people.

    Then almost everyone is happy!

Also a third holiday for anyone who doesn't agree with the other two holidays. Actually I think they should make the holiday the 3rd Monday in January, that way it is always a long weekend, and the date keeps moving around, so no one can complain about the date.
