For some time now the term "black board" has been out of favour and replaced by "chalk board". When I went to school it was always a black board, even though ours were painted green. But no one has said that the term "white board" should be changed. Should it not be an "erasable marker board"????

Initially I thought all this PC rubbish was a bit funny, now it just seems ridiculus bordering on some kind of metal issue or OCD.

People now search for offence in everthing.

I said it before but it seems that a lot of people are getting offended that other people are offended. If it doesn't mean anything to you, then why does changing a name matter? It sounds to me, from my view, that the people most offended are the ones that are against the name changes for no reason except usually "but I grew up with that". I'm not digging at you and just pointing it out but why would it matter to you if a name is changed? Sounds like you're offended by the change? ? Times change words change and meanings change. Look up the origins of a lot of words and places and you'll find they've changed significantly over the years in meaning pronunciation and offensiveness. Once upon a time a homophobic slur was used to describe a bunch of sticks. I used to be able to buy fake cigarette lollies as a kid but i really see that selling kids fake cigarettes called fags is really not the most acceptable standard.

Bayer pharmaceuticals released heroin as a cough medicine. Why aren't we offended that it was changed? Cocaine was a main ingredient of energy drinks and tonics. So on and so on.

I just don't understand why the name of a colour, when it is describing something of that colour is to be construed as offensive. The boards were, initially, painted black to show white chalk easily. The term black board had absolutely ZERO to do with any race of people or culture.

Do we need to change the name of the colour black? Maybe we call it ALL as it is absorbing all colours of the spectrum and reflecting none. Or maybe we call in NONE?

I'm white (sorry if that offends anyone), what if my name was Rodger Black, do I now have to change my name and erase my family history. "Hello my name is Rodger NONE"

As I said this is getting quite ridiculous almost out of control. As the thread title states "PC gone mad".

What annoys me is that I am expected to change my ways, my language, to appease the confected outrage of an extremely vocal tiny minority. Most people just seem to let it happen, but it's this apathy that leads to the burning of books, the cancelling of culture, the de-platforming of dissenters, and those same people are too brainwashed to see it.

How ironic to see the Party in power in the US now, you know, the champions of the Blacks, is the Party of slavery. They fought a terrible war to keep that position. They still are.

But we have changed our ways and our language. I'm not sure how old you are or your status but it wasn't that long ago that being gay was just being happy. Would you say to someone that you're a proud gay man when you just mean you're happy and just achieved a huge goal? And the fact that the party in charge was the party of slavery goes to show that cultures can hopefully learn from the past and move forward positively. If they still championed slavery as any kind of option than they wouldn't be moving forward and acknowledging change and past mistakes.

I don't see it as a bad thing that a small vocal minority is being heard. History tells us many times that not only small but huge minorities have been held back at best by the majorities or at least the powerful, whether that's military or economically powerful. Cancel culture is a strange beast but for some of it's part it's good it's just a kangaroo court unfortunately. There's a certain satisfaction in seeing certain people get instantly penalized for being horrible. It doesn't always work I agree.

I'm not sure about the blackboard thing. I don't really think it's got anything to do with people just that it changed and not all blackboard were black as you say some were green and the like. Also the connection of the world via the Internet now makes it harder to get away with certain local culturally acceptable standards that really aren't in line with world views.

Look at the c bomb. Call an American that and you'll be in a fight straight away. Call an Australian that and you'll be mates for life 😂

    Google Ngram Viewer

You can see by this graph that the word blackboard started to become less popular around 1927. The word chalkboard was trending late 1950. I think that's because traditionally they were slate boards painted with blackboard paint and they started using wooden or material based boards painted with chalk paint. The Americans took it on the most, the British not so much. I can't seem to find anything that suggests the name is being used less due to being politically correct, and the most substantial drop in use was pre civil rights movement anyway. If it was really such a big thing there would be a much more noticeable change in times that were considered more pc like the late 70s and early 00s

I respect Morgan Freeman's take on this. The full interview was very good.

I guess this is politically incorrect these days.

Even though it has nothing to do with race as they are both white and was invented in 1961 (what a great year) during the cold war. There was even a Grey Spy, which was a woman, that made random apperances at which time the cartoon strip became Spy vs Spy vs Spy. And she always won.

When this was only in MAD magazine I did not ever associate this with race. This is the sort of stuff Mr Tins and I are talking about, people trying to change stuff that does not need changing. Trying to put racial and bigotry undertones on things that never where or intended to be racially, culturally, sexually or anything else biased. It should not be change for change sake, not everthing is black and white.
Am I allowed to say that?
