Their easy enough to start that way if you've had the practice and know the tricks.

    BUT,

if its dead flat you may not have enough go to energise the fuel pump or the fuel relay.

and yes most early reverse gears are lower than 1st, in a landy you can also hit low range.

If it's that flat, with an alternator you are wasting your time, as you need electrickery to energise the diodes. Older cars with generators might give you enough. Course, a nine volt battery out of the old Dolphin torches, or even the little smoke detector ones would probably overcome that, and the fuel relay. Dunno about the pump.

Its not the diodes you're engergising its the rotor winding, Smart cookies take theirs apart and after working out the polarity of ones of the ends drill out and insert a rare earth magnet.

the dolphin 6v battery will start a series... much to the toyota driving muppet flechers who thought it would be funny to break into my car, turn on all the iso switches and my headlights then laugh at me asking before I got to my car how i was going to start it at end ex...

oddly, being the only one with jumper cables after loading my gear, tickling the pump, wiring the battery, cranking it...

sorry guys, no way I can start a mighty toyota with only a 35 a alternator...

In my army transport platoon days we were taught that if you can't get up a hill in 1st gear - try reverse.

I heard or read somewhere that the early cars, pro'ly even up to WW II vintage could struggle to get up hills in 1st, so people would reverse them up.

    Is this possible?

Hand cranked plenty of Ford flathead V8 engines on 6 volt systems with flat batteries. Never saw it as that difficult. Maybe as the engines were well worn it might have made a difference

Flat head Ford was low compression compared to any Rover V8, and arguably lower resistance from 'extras' such as power steering, aircon compressor etc, not to mention overhead valve gear.

The question that has not yet been answered is whether turning the engine over with the crank handle stops the wheels burying into the sand.

I must have seen that movie soon after it was released. It was released in 1958 and I was young enough to accept without question that cranking would get them up the sand dune.

I know that in 1968 when i drove from NSW to Dampier WA in my FWD 1964 Mini it got through **** loads of sand on the 1100 miles of dirt on the Nullarbor where rear wheel drive vehicles had big problems , so the theory sounds reasonable IMO .
