    Something is really wrong here..

Went to re-register my trailer last week, registration lapsed a couple of years ago.
Needs to be inspected, so made the appointment, paid the booking fee, appointment fee, and because they insist you pay in advance by credit card, the card fee.
OK, I know Vicroads is a funds collection agency...
Turned up on the day, met by a doorman limiting numbers inside, ok.
He asked for my drivers licence, ok handed it over.
While wallet was open he spotted my Medicare card, "can I have your Medicare card please?"
Me - What does medicare have to do with registering a trailer?
"Oh we like to have more than one ID"
    Me - NO.
5 second shocked silence.... wallet is still open... "can I have your Centrelink card then?"
    Me - NO
Lets me in and tells me to wait.
Got called at the appointed time, trailer was checked, ok, registration processed, new plate issued (and paid for. Old plate still fine but not acceptable.)
Walked out with legal trailer, no mention of Medicare or Centrelink.
So whats going on here? fishing for personal info? or am I just paranoid
    in my old age??

Well done Terry. The rampant presumption that we’ll hand over all our personal info to any gov or private agency - for cross referencing - is outrageous.

Facebook and Google et al are better at doing it under the radar and under the guise of a ‘free service’, but ultimately it’s the same thing.

I’m not on Facebook and I don’t use Google search engine. I use a VPN for my internet connections...but I’m sure they all still know everything about me.

We are all just pawns of the tsars of growth capitalism. Privacy is kaput.

...as you say, Something is Really Wrong Here.

I would call Vicroads and advise them - there isn't even a requirement for the security guard to see your ID - they are only there to limit numbers inside and have no right to look at any of your personal info in any way - even your licence. I had a chat to the fellow doing this at our local Vicroads and that's what he said he was there to do - no identity check required, just making sure the office area didn't get too full. I only had to scan the Vic Services QR code or fill in my name and phone number as per Covid safe requirements.

Something is very wrong here - report it as soon as you can - where, when, appointment number, etc.

I suppose they are aware that we might walk in and be a little nervous that a request might be denied, so we may hand over information to ensure success?
Well I'm over it. I had a 5 year planning battle with an outer Melb. council which showed me that our so called custodians of correctness can play dirty and still appear to be within the rules.
Complain to Vicroads? yes sure that'll work.

Well not complaining to them may only get someone else passing their info on and getting scammed.

Maybe an email to A crumby affair or similar?

Nah, but, depending on the Electorate, an email to his MP might help. I agree it needs to be addressed.

You might be right about some councils/officials, as this seems suspicious....Dandenong councillor wants police to probe allegation slug planted in I Cook Foods' kitchen - ABC News

    Key points:

    • Caterers I Cook Foods were temporarily shut down after food safety concerns were raised by council officers including about the alleged presence of the slug
    • The business's owners accuse the council of running a campaign against them and say the slug was planted
    • The food safety charges were dropped and the owners are now taking the council to court claiming damages

Yes I know you're right Gavin. If we let it happen it will keep happening.

If you didn't like the sound of my trailer reg. experience you won't like what happens if you want to buy or sell residential property in Victoria.
There is now a requirement for a "Land Title Verification of Identity Form"
This involves a computer readable form where you enter your current address, property address, signature.
You then present to an independent office (Aus Post in my case) and show drivers licence, birth certificate, Medicare card or Centrelink card, passport, and maybe marriage certificate.
A photo is then taken and compared to the one on your licence.
The land transfer will not be allowed to proceed to settlement if this is not done.
"To reduce the risk of identity fraud" the paperwork says.
This process is valid for two years.
Being a little cynical it sounds more to me about securing the maximum stamp duty payment.

Seems Victoria is behind the times, the federal government already have all your details and matching photos, the states only need to use it. Digital Identity | Digital Transformation Agency

I have had a few transactions with the NSW govt where they ask you to provide a Drivers license and other form of ID and match it electronically.

The photo data base was briefly controversial

The bill authorising the sharing of the information has not yet passed parliament

But don't panic, its all governed by an interim oversight authority..... "Australia’s Digital Identity system is made up of agencies, private sector businesses and systems working together to deliver a secure way to prove someone’s identity online to access services. It is governed by the Interim Oversight Authority"
