Couple of years ago I had double knee replacement & couldn't get one , Found it hard getting in & out the passengers side when the vehicles beside us parked on the line . A permit would have been a help as these bays are a bit wider so you can fully open the doors.
At our local shops the disable & parents with prams parking is out side the bottle shop ( Chemist is next door), there is a constant stream of people park there without permits to go to the bottle shop & when challenged the answer is only going to be couple of minutes. The other problem with this parking is there is no break in the kerbing for wheel chair or pram access so you still have to walk 50m to the nearest ramp & 50m back to get to the chemist, it is a very poorly designed car park.

My wife got a temp permit for her hip replacement and later after her spine op . You don't know why people ( or clowns in your opinion ) who display no outward symptoms may need a permit . .

    Nope. Not down here.
Simply hang the permit from rear view mirror and off you go.
As long as you have a permit our local council won't even look.

I went to a shopping centre close to me last night, it has 14 disabled spots in the underground and more outside - and prob 150-200 people in the centre (to be fair its hard to accurately estimate people in a large area when they are moving) I did not see one wheelchair, scooter or 4point walking frame...A miracle to be sure.

I just came back from the shops & parked in a normal parking space , large FWD pulled into disable parking space behind displaying disable permit & stopped about 100mm off our rear bumper , I went around to the back to get my wife's wheelie walker out but could not get hatch open so asked him to move back, he reluctantly moved back just enough for me to walk through . I should have dropped the walker on his bonnet when I lifted it out. I then watched him while him & his young son got out of the car & went to the shops with no sign of disability . I guess the permit is for his invisible wife or mother it looked pretty old & faded .

l used to love how the defunct Masters Hardware put pram markings at the front of the store and row or 2 behind the disabled spots.

I think that it would be fair to say that most of the people I see using disabled parking bays have no disability at all. If your wife had a THR she'd've been on crutches for some time and after spinal damage I doubt that she was bouncing around, so I would expect that she had outward symptoms.

I was back on public transport a month after my operation and - whilst on crutches, so I was clearly and visibly disabled - had people on trams who were not suffering from any disability flatly refuse to move from the disability seats at the front of the tram. I doubt that they all had invisible disabilities. Basically, there's some really selfish ****s around. In the old days the connies would've sorted it out but now you're on your own. The funny thing is that whilst the people who were supposed to move wouldn't oftentimes other people would jump to their feet and offer me a seat.

My reply was a 2 part reply , Ist you should have been able to obtain a temp permit for your hip revision as my wife did .

2nd people who have Chronic pulmonary or Lung conditions such as emphysema are entitled to Disabled parking permits , you do not have to display all sorts of wobbly stuff to be disabled .

My late FiL had a permit, but looked as healthy as a scrub bull. His heart was only working at 25%, we would drop him in the disabled zone (with the permit), then park the car elsewhere. That left the limited disability spots for genuine disabled drivers.
No one to complain to around here - Sunbury has more that 40,000 people now and they send a parking officer here once a month, so it's pretty much a free for all. Council is too far away to care what goes on here even though they could make a few dollars.
