My understanding is, as the load on the engine goes up the adblue to diesel ratio goes up.
So when towing your big van , your fuel use may go up 50-70% your adblue may go up 100-150%

What would happen if you either diluted - or replaced - the AdBlu with... distilled or rain water ?
Genuine question, from one totally unfamiliar with the whole concept 7 execution
Am I correctg in assuming Ad-Blu manufacturing is tied in with urea fertilizer production? - and we in Oz only have / had ONE urea manufacturer ??
- Which makes the need to import the stuff... a Grade - A "WORRY" for National Security...![]()
The urea for our AdBlue comes from China.

The sensor that detects the concentration of the adblue would prevent the engine starting due to an error in most cases. Granted any sensor could be bypassed but that would void your warranty and put you at risk of being prosecuted under anti pollution laws.

As mentioned there is a sensor that checks this - it’s called a ‘DEF Quality Sensor’ (Adblue quality sensor here) and it is an ultrasonic sensor that detects urea content - the ultrasonic waves travel faster in higher concentrations of urea so diluting it or putting something else in there will cause a fault that will either derate the engine or not allow it to run at all.
There is already smart people offering plug in modules to simulate the sensor - in trucks at least - not sure about cars yet, but the OEM’s aren’t stupid - if you disconnect and reconnect the sensor - this alone will trigger a fault which will need a visit to a dealer - and they’ll know what you’re up to. Easy enough to do right, you just need to disconnect the battery and leave it for a bit bit some truck drivers don’t do this - have seen more than one turn up at a mates workshop to get this fault cleared.![]()

I remember reading that adblue consumption should be around 3% of you diesel usage.. that was in a Cummins magazine.
Thank Christ the truck I'm currently driving doesn't use the stuff.
