It's a great map and puts the numbers of 'nations' and languages in context.

It was created back in 1996 and a lot of work has happened since, which is maybe leading to name confusion for interested people.

For example the 'Wathourong' country in Vic on the map is now more accurately called 'Wadawurrong' and that group is the recognised representative group with the state gov these days.

There is a more recent map.............. i'll have a look when time permits.

Last night I met and had a great chat with Jethro a Larrakia 'Marngrook' young gun about that. He was kind enough to teach me a few words as well. His wife and beautiful baby were in a near new Tesla at a charge point I was happily waiting for. (heck it was cold outside) Marngrook is footy in Gunditjmara.

Yallock, Ikarra and Jindavik is a few of the words I now have a little diversity with

Names and opinions are lively in any culture. Jethro and I have a deal to trade some barra, mud crab and magpie geese for my scallops, crayfish and abalone after his next visit to his Larrakia home. I am a very lucky man

Jethro wants time to take his beautiful crew in a Land rover like ours after we chatted about my Disco trips to Ikarra ranges, Wajuk and Diving in Malkana.

While in Darwin I was a member of the Larrakia SGTS mess, [ larrakia being the name of the depot, right on the edge of Darwin City, on the water.[ The Navy base Coonawarra, was down the track, on the HWY. . There was a good reason for that. ] The Larrakia Army base had a golf course , up on the peninsula . Down from the golf course at sea level were ancient fish traps used by the Larrakia people for hundreds of years, but allowed to fall in to disrepair. One of the SGTS was a larrakia man, and my mate and I one afternoon in the mess got in his ear and we convinced him we should repair the traps [ with his expertise] and catch fish again. So we did, and the traps caught fish for the first time for whom knows how long. This was well before you had to get permission from the traditional land owners , we didn't ask any one, kept it to ourselves. It's true the best ideas come from the SGTS mess.

Now the Larrakia people have organised themselves into the Larrakia Nation, best explained here;

I noticed some here have been invited into clan culture, this is not new it's been going on since the First Fleet. With that introduction comes a great responsibility. I hope they are aware of it.
