    1. What was the capital of New Zealand before it was moved to Wellington?

    Auckland, althoughRussell in the Bay of Islands was capital for a short period in 1840, Auckland was capital from 1840-1845.

    2. Where in New Zealand did the severe 1931 earthquake occur?

    Napier. It occurred at 10:47 am on 3 February, 256 died, and thousands were injured.

    3. The steepest street in the world is in NZ, what is its name and approx gradient?

    Baldwin Street is a little under 350m long and it is 34.8% gradient. It is so steep, on a hot day, tar on the road would flow downhill. Frosts/ice in winter can cause issues. The 161m long top section climbs 47m vertically, an average gradient of 1:3.41. At its maximum, about 70m from the top the slope of Baldwin Street is about 1:2.86 (19° or 35%).
