Just announced today in NZ that the booster timing will move from 6 months to 4 months. Glad as I would have had to wait till mid-feb. Now I just have to wait for the roll out to begin for the plebs after New Year. It is Border Staff and Front Line Staff front of the queue then it remains to be seen how they're going to roll this out.

A few other announcements today too. Omicron over there in AU is such an issue that the MIQ-free travel that was supposed to start between NZ and Aust mid-Jan has been postponed till end of Feb. Vaccination of 5-11 year olds will start Mid January. International arrivals MIQ stays will be extended to 10 days in MIQ instead of the newly relaxed previous 7 days MIQ then the last 3 days at home. The duration of the space between pre-departure tests and actually leaving for NZ will be reduced from 72 hours to 48 hours. Tightening up to try to delay the arrival of Omicron beyond the MIQ and border. We currently have something like 22 Omicron cases in MIQ and increasing quickly. A case of when not if it gets out.

The message Omicron is milder than Delta came from the African experience, and now with more time to study this the consensus is that most of the infected people there were young [ which normally have milder symptoms] and had been infected in the earlier waves that swept thru Africa, thus giving them some immune protection. As posted earlier , the Imperial College London has done a study which they say the risk of re-infection with Omicron is 5 times higher than Delta, and there are no signs Omicron is milder than Delta. Looks like mask wearing is back in the ACT, and may be mandated at the meeting tomorrow for all jurisdictions.

Another bit of news is the young man from NSW who was instrumental in causing the outbreak in Tasmania has been jailed for 6 months.

The hospital numbers are still 90% plus those who chose to go the odd way. Suspect with the very high transmission rate that will bite almost every last one of that group. US, UK, EU..... and almost everywhere is on a huge upward trend.

W.A. is gold again for now.

99% of over 70s are fully vaccinated happily. Unhappily Astra Zucchini seems poor protection with out the 3rd dose booster. That is a worry plus I think. Roll on January Vaccine supplies. Noting many Country Chemist and sites have geared up to help vax holiday makers. I love Country poeple

We did get offers of vax for 23 December which I refused. had it been 7 days earlier I bet 3,000,000+ would have got a jab- Such is Life.
The vaccination hubs are going gangbusters up here. Nothing like a little bit of fear to smarten the wasters & urgers, , we should be at 90% soon. Wife & I boosted now, just got to get the kids done. Son was advised to get Moderna as a booster, as the best mix with Pfizer.

News from the US shows just how infectious Omicron is. Two weeks ago, Omicron accounted for just 1 % of US cases, one week ago it was 13 %, and now , in two weeks, Omicron accounts for 70 % of all US cases. Delta accounted for 26 % over the last week. According to the NYT.

With literally 1000s of kiddies with Covid here in Vic I then the NZ delay is a smart move. Unfortunately with the period between the kiddies vaccine being rather long again it is really the end of March before the early movers in the 5-12s will be double vaccinated.

It is very lucky the schools all closed with the cases at primary schools in particular was escalating at an insane rate.

The current latest outbreak here in NZ now stands at a total of approx 10990 locally acquired cases, of these, 24% were under 11 years old.
