CD or not CD - That was the Question

    Hi All,

I just replaced the head unit in my Defender (Puma). The factory Alpine unit stopped talking to my phone so I replaced with a new (Alpine) unit. I ended up doing a pretty much like for like swap but was tossing up whether to put in a head unit without a CD player. The Alpine unit without the CD was only about $40 cheaper so not sheep stations but I ended up getting the CD. I figured the next buyer would probably want one and in hindsight having CD will be useful out of phone range (no Spotify!!).

I also figured the majority of users on this forum would vote for CD - am I right?

Probably good to have, but I never use mine. I dont even take CD's. I have my music on my phone which then plays via bluetooth - far easier than taking and scratching CDs.

Yeah, people don't buy CD's anymore do they? I would have thought that bought music (not streamed) is mostly downloaded anyway these days.

I reckon the more options the better, as long as the unit has Bluetooth as well as CD.

Spotify download and off line is my tip. Add if you can put google or apple play in the unit you then get to say what you want which really works some of the time and is as funny as the rest of the time. I have a CD stack in my old RIP and new D3. It is not used at all really. Plug my phone in the AUX cable ( In the back of my D3) and set my phone to car mode listen to me. My phone is a cheaper four year old at least one not lardy dah version at all.

I think the family spoitify deal makes CDs totally redundant and any strange musical impulse does not need delayed gratification. It also works when I am running, riding and working in the garage and keeps the kids all happy.

Note I think Spoitify maybe one of those Off shore tax dodgers!!!

Yours have 8 track as well? CD or not CD - That was the Question

CD in a 4wd is generally asking for trouble. The mechanisms get thumped and the dust kills them.

Mechless BT / USB / CarPlay / Auto is the way forward.

Brisk acceleration can make CD's skip as well, or so I'm informed by a mechanic mate that worked on BMW M3 and took it for a "test" drive!

Brisk acceleration? Never struck that issue with a Td5.
I think USB input and Bluetooth are essential, on a new unit.

post my Spotify comment I have to add it is 5 for $2 for CDs in far out WA on my trip back last time. I will have to flash them up tomorrow when I do have a reason to drive the Disco picking up a load at 5am. One CD I grabbed was the BIG O. Roy was cool yet once per decade is almost enough
