Apparently it is important that they should be the sort of joke that no-one laughs at, but everyone groans on hearing them. It is essential that they should be corny.
That is because humour is a rather subjective thing and because Christmas is meant to be a time that brings people together. If the joke makes some people laugh and some people groan, that is a divisive experience rather than an inclusive one.
It is important for everyone at Christmas dinner to share the same reaction. It is very difficult to write jokes that everyone will find amusing. It is much easier to write jokes that everyone will find corny.
