Mods make zero difference to club reg, if it did most of the rods and heavily modded cars wouldn't have it.
You need to be registered in a club, any car club will do, the car must be over 25 years old and you must get a current road worthy then just get it done through the states registration authority

I believe NSW Historic Reg is very different to Victoria's, with a lot more restrictions on mods and use.

Vic also has Historic, Street Rod and Rally permits, thay are different, for different vehicles and use.

I'm sure someone from NSW will chime in.

• you must be a member of a Transport for NSW-recognised historic vehicle club.

The main takeaway from this is ....... "The vehicle must not be modified." and "your vehicle must be as close to original condition as possible, with no alterations except for safety features"

As stated, Vic's rules are very different to NSW. It's one area where Vic is more lenient, maybe the only one. There are rumours Vic is going to change.

But do they check? I’ve seen a few Perenties on club plates at KLR in Sydney. I do recall one was on Vic plates - seems a long way from home for club plates.

In Vic it largely depends on the clubs. The counter folk at VicRoads mostly wouldn't know a Perentie from a Purvis Eureka, it's all about the paperwork hoops. We have here the Red Plate Club. We need to join that, or of course the LROCV, or the Monaro club... have a current RWC and we're in.

As for Vic plates in NSW, AFAIK there is no restriction on interstate travel on a club permit. And, as the system IS a permit, NOT a registration, the plates do not show up on the computer ( that is old info, it could have changed ), and the interstate authorities, the ones with the flashing lights, do not have access to the record, and are probably not cognisant of the rules regarding log books etc., although I don't want to be the one to test that

I didn't know vic was so different to NSW, once again how stupid is that, wouldn't a national system be better!!
Standard other than safety improvements , so that would include, brake upgrades, suspension upgrades, seat and interior upgrades, one could argue that any upgrade to a 30 year old car could or would make it safer than how it was released from factory

Scouse (on this forum) is the inspector for his car club. I think he said mods are permitted if they are period mods.

He says a lot of other clubs let anything join without concern for modifications.

He and I have both seen cars on historic plates being used every day, apparently outside the applicable rules on use.
