Big W also had them at a good price.
yes, Arapiles has hit the nail on the head. There are a number of Explorer brand extensions, which don’t perform as well as the originals. You need to look harder for the original ones, particularly when they go on SALE. My son buys the originals. Very warm and last many washes.

I use a standardised sock system.

I ONLY buy Explorer socks ( Original wool blend variation) 12 pairs at a time in one colour.

So no need to sort socks ever.

The last 12 pairs I bought at BigW on sale.

They still seem fine, thick and seem hard wearing but it’s only been a year so far.

Normally the 12 pairs will last quite a few years.
    Cheers

With twelve pairs you'd expect them to last a fair while as each pair would only get one months wear each year.

I gave up on Explorer socks some years ago after wearing them for many years, maybe I got some of the brand extension ones, I don't know. I was recommended to try Stockman Socks, and have found them to be excellent. They also have a number of styles now, so watch which ones you try.
Good luck in your search for comfortable socks.

    regardless of were they are.
Yes, but if very cold they might wear socks with those too!

I have some Explorer socks and they seem fine I wasn't aware of the different versions.

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions. There were some good alternatives if my purchase does not work out

When you look closer there are now a wide variety of construction and materials all branded as Explorer

One thing I noticed is that even the ones with wool no longer carry the Woolmark which leaves one wondering about exactly what they are using if it no longer meets the requirements or if it was just that the cost of the label and no one would notice if it was removed

Have purchased some Explorer Thermal as they have ‘with wool’ on the label. Not sure exactly what that means but seem the closest in construction to what I used to buy as an Explorer
