I hate telstra ! Been there done that crap.
I hate Optas ! As above.
    Cheers.
unlimited access maybe, the account has limitations so it isnt really "unlimited", it is quota'ed and throttled.

    from their website

    Unlimited quota now doubled!!

Quota now doubled!! All unlimited now plans now come with a 20gb quota instead of the previous 10gb before being their connection is shaped. There is now an on-peak / off-peak type arrangement, 10gb assigned to on-peak ( 8AM-11PM) and 10gb assigned to off-peak ( 11PM - 8AM ).

Fact is Telstra would be OK if they could compete at the others levels, but government regs prevent that so that the others have a chance...

Telstra mobile ****s all over the others for coverage and performance IMHO and experience. Their service to me and my businesses has always been top notch along with general pricing in the vacinity of the others.

However their Broadband packages are poor value...
No, I've got the sh*ts because they are switching off a perfectly good network that works well and has competition. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Its near enough to unlimited for me tho, Mate. How much do you need ?
My mistake for saying unlimited, not theirs !
Still the best I have used and I have tried alot over the years.
A nice family to do business with and I am happy to recommend them.
If I move to the other side of the country, I will stay with them.
I'd miss their friendly faces tho.

In this day and age its sometimes hard to find and recieve good service
    from approachable professional people.
    Allsing Matilda, eh.
    Cheers.

I heard that even though Telstra is more expensive it is better to go with them as they still own the copper, and using third party can be a hassle. I have Tesltra on the home phone and I see they are offering 9 months half price access.

Which is the best speed to go with for average home use ( banking, surfing etc maybe download a movie or two ). I was thinking 256 /512K ??

Also, is it better to get a wireless router or just a standard ADSL modem ?/ I'll only have one desktop connected

and...how many ADSL filters can you put on...I currently have four extension phones that I would like to keep.
So what was the outcome Wayne...?

Ah, good to see incorrectly using the term "unlimited" isn't restricted to the UK then - how this is allowed is beyond me, as the non-techie folks really think they're getting something they're not. Bad enough when you get rate limited when you hit your limit, but I note some plans charge you $/MB over it too!

Mind you, having hit my 60GB limit two months running, maybe they do need something in place...

over here is is supposedly a no no as well but it isnt enforced very well.

they circumvent it by saying it is a name or label, not a description of the service, even tho "Unlimited Now" sort of implies it is unlimited service.

telstra's "unlimited" is even more limited than matilda's, but for some they waver the charges over the limit until you do something they dont like then they hit you with a bill for the lot, sometimes at 19c / mb when the going wholesale rate is under 3 cents.

have had several souls in here in distress over the years.

one dear old thing had about a $3k bill after her loving grandson hit the pr0n and warez sites on her adsl connection....

On my plan they just rate limit to 64k...but it is $150/month to start with! Still, it's always fun balancing torrents to get 59GB by the day before it rolls over and then letting the "normal" VPN and work use take care of the final GB on the last day....

Netspace is equally the cheapest with no excess download cost.

$49.95/mth gives 1MB/512k. Excellent speed, better than at work.

I recently bought a Belkin ADSL modem/4 port/wireless router. Had a few issues with it getting confused after a power outage but otherwise good. Remember that you get 100mb on cat5 hardwired but only 10mb (ish) via wireless.

I use the wireless when I'm lazy and want to sit by the pool/tv/bar whatever, and the cat5 when I'm serious.

oops ...sorry I haven't been watching this thread forgot I started it

Well I went, wait for it .......................

    Bigpond

    Why ?

Well they were offering the half price for 12 months and as we have the home phone and mobile with them ...... seemed like a pretty good deal.
I applied online ...the self install kit arrived in a week or so and was no problem to get going... everything in the exchange was patched across to ADSL by the time the kit arrived ..
so far ( 7 months or so ) there have been no problems with the service so I am pretty happy ....so far ......
but i did upgrade from the 200Mb limit to unlimited pretty quickly ....
