Crappy cars - the worst new or modern car you’ve driven.

So, just starting a thread to see what others think are modern lemons as far as how they drive and feel etc - there are so many new players on the market.

I’ll start with the Haval H6

Ok, thought I’d start this thread off with truly the worst car I’ve ever driven - given it is basically brand new and there are ZERO redeeming features about this car, it amazes me they sell any - They only sell a few but that’s a few too many to unleash on unsuspecting or ignorant Australians IMO.

Outwardly it’s a generic mid to large SUV with and the only thing I like about the styling is the rear tail light that runs completely across the back of the vehicle. The windows look a little small compared to the door which you realise is exactly the case once you start driving it - more on this later.

Inside is where the first signs of something being wrong begin. The dash is a cheap and very small tablet badly placed so the steering wheel obscures most of the data. The fuel gauge for example is such a small part of the screen I have to squint to see what it says.

The infotainment system is another screen - bigger than the actual dash and is the slowest I’ve ever encountered. It can take several seconds to switch to a new screen. The worst bit is that ALL in cab functions are operated through this so doing something like turning the fan or temp up or down takes multiple touches of the screen and takes ages - hardly safe to do and usually sets the lane control warning off - which is another issue with the car. Imagine having a tri tone alarm go off every time you take a corner slightly differently to how the onboard system thinks you should - imagine no more, this car will LOUDLY set an alarm off almost continuously on a twisty road and it can only be turned off when in park - so if you forget before you drive off you get this keeping you company on your drive - and it resets itself every time the car starts so again you have to wade through multiple menus to disable it.

The tech aside which is all badly integrated the interior itself is badly designed. Those small windows I was talking about earlier really raids their head once driving. If you are used to resting your arm anywhere on a door then this ISN’T the car for you as this is impossible. The ledge of the window is very high so forget that and the door handle and rest lower down is so far down that also can’t be used - complete fail. Add to this there are hard plastic ridges running down the door card that stick
Into your arm or leg depending on what you’re trying to rest on it which digs in and becomes uncomfortable in minutes.

So, surely it can’t drive as bad as all this right - I’m just being mean? NO - it’s awful, scary and borderline unsafe IMO.

To start with, you can’t even start it unless you have your foot on the brake (fine, that’s normal) and your seatbelt is on. That’s frustrating…. Then, try and drive off once you’ve done this - put it in gear and a gentle press of the accelerator and the hand brake light goes off and releases - well on most cars - that does work if the passenger seatbelt is also done up but if your driving solo the light will go off but the hand brake won’t release - you then have to manually release it - it tries to drive off but with the brake still on - no warning about this - it thinks the brake is off so just struggles to move and makes grinding noises until you figure it out - only takes a meter or so, the brake works well…

The lane assistance cannot be turned off - only set to ‘light’ which still turns the wheel when you don’t want it to almost all the time - of course accompanied by the tri tone alarm if you haven’t disabled the warning so the whole experience is draining driving any distance - other cars I have driven with the same tech make it much less intrusive and easy to disable if needed - My partners Rav 4 doesn’t need it disabling as it doesn’t interfere anywhere near as much. It’s just badly implemented.

When on the freeway the lane assistance wants you to sit very far into the LH side of you lane - it shows the car in the middle of the lane on the dash animation, but you’re almost driving with your left wheels on the line - maybe this is a calibration issue but it means the steering tries to fight you if you try and place the car in the middle of the lane.

The ‘adaptive’ cruise control will start to slow you down should a car ahead be going slower but once it drops around 10KPH it just switches off. Also, the incremental up and down
Switches which usually jog the speed 1KPH per click jog the vehicle 5KPH so pretty useless as well and impossible to fine tire your speed to where you want it.

Overall this is a horrible car - if you’re offered an ‘upgrade’ when hiring a car, politely decline - take a Yaris if you have to, just don’t accept one of these as an option.

Oh, this is the top spec unit as well so was supposed to be a ‘luxury’ car - I couldn’t think of anything further from the truth.

    Beware the Haval H6!!!

    All of them!
Even tho not so new ones .. ie. from yesteryear-ish.

I used to enjoy my dads little Peugeot 307Hdi. great little car, drives awesome for a clapped out(by dad) 20 year old, sort'a 'sheet' .... box.

The more I learn about these new 'peaches of sheets' .. the less I like about how they have been designed to not be restorable in the future.
Stupid stuff like install new part, and you got to have software to tell brains that new part has been added! It's totally stupid.

So for me, all new cars are lemons.
Yeah, I spend lots of $s to get software to get nowhere with it, only to find out later that lesser $s, but elite hacking skillz were needed instead.

From an actual driving point of view tho, Kia small-ish some drone cage of some variety. Maybe the Rio. About a '19 model. Company car we sometimes have to use to get to a job. Utter garbage to drive. noise levels in cabin sound like similar to 80's Pootrolls on worn muddies. Had to endure 2 hrs to Philip Island in it a few weeks back .. and still haven't recovered. Fine(and kind'a OK to drive) if road surface is new and smooth, but rough or coarse road surface(near on 100% of Aussie roads) .. it's barbaric what it does to the occupants.

Other extreme was the Ssaynong Musso brother had for a bit(sold due to not needing ute any longer). So damn nice to drive compared to either of the two big players in terms of NVH. Just a pity my stooge brother bought the idiot level 20" 35 aspect ratio tyre/wheel option .. ride quality suffered.
    Arthur.

All these discos are giving me a heart attack!

Addendum re the Haval - it nearly caused a significant accident today - while driving down the freeway this arvo we entered an 80KPH roadwork zone - 2 lanes, me in the left lane doing 80 on the Speedo and the GPS showing 76. The lanes moved to the left where some barriers were with well marked temporary lane markings and as a car in front of me in the RH lane followed their lane around and I started to do the same in my lane (all good, everyone happy) the car locked the brakes on suddenly and started flashing a light and an alarm going off - while this is all well and good you might say as it thought I might have had a car cut me off - it didn’t and I was well clear of it, the poor bugger in the truck behind me (who was probably a little close) swerved and locked everything up to avoid the now much slower Haval that’s done all this **** on its own and damn near cleaned up 2 other cars in the process. Luckily no accident but close - all because I can’t turn the ****ing driver aids off when I don’t need them!

No good the ****ing price of **** avoiding an accident - or in this case a non existent accident if it causes another!

Do the ****wit engineers even consider this when implementing the tech?

And riddle me this - while we know this is a driving aid, and ultimately the driver is responsible- how the **** do I avoid this situation?

It’s going back tomorrow for a replacement for something that won’t try and kill me - so much for a 5 Star safety rating - who thinks up this crap?

    🤬🤬🤬

We have two Rangers here, both have had issues, one less than 12 months old,the other almost 3 yrs.

And one of them they dudded us on purchase with supposedly HD suspension, which really wasn't HD,number of leaves and thickness no different from standard.
The dealer refunded the money for the so called HD suspension,no questions asked, even though they persisted to say it was HD.
We had to get the suspension sorted on both of them so they could carry the weight we have in them all the time, without the rear sagging.

Back to the 'Oh what a feeling brand',but unfortuately sometimes they dont have the model spec we want,or the wait time is too long.

First generation BMW X5 4.4 V8 all time worst vehicle I have ever owned. In 2 years it needed the engine replaced twice after self destructing and requiring tow truck recovery. Also replaced radiator, thermostat and self leveling suspension control unit and more which I have managed to block from my memory

Third engine was on way out with same symptoms but BMW dealer said was nothing wrong with it. Got that in writing and included it with the car when sold it

After I sold it worked out vehicle had spent half of the 2 years of ownership in the dealer where it was having an affair with the mechanic

Replaced it with a Range Rover as could not deal with the BMW quality. Have owned a few Range Rovers and never had a serious problem with one. Would never own another BMW

Couple of friends had the same BMW at the time and all had problems with the vehicle just not to the level of mine. Of course if you asked they would say all was good but if you pressed them the stories would come out. Once one said something the others would also have a sad story to tell. One keeps going back for the BMW quality even though has problems with each

I tell customers to stick with brands that have a good foot print in Australia and therefor in general a better customer support.

Hyundai, Kia, Mazda, Subaru and the king of mediocrity Toyota (lets face it if you buy a corolla your likely to never have any issues).
The current Mitsubishi models are fine, but the next generation are likely to be more Nissan/Renault sourced due to the 3 joint venture

    Avoid
Another great **** sandwich to avoid is anything from Stalantis which includes fiat, Chrysler, Jeep, Peugeot, Citroen, etc
The brands from the convicted criminal organisation (Volkswagen) which include - VW, Audi, Bentley, Skoda (and a few more that arent worth mentioning)
Any Chinese brand, poor sales, poor build quality equals poor service support. The Chinese block or put massive tariffs on Australian export at their whim, when and how it suits them, but it's ok for you to buy their cars? which include Greatwall, Haval (which is Greatwall), Volvo, MG, LDV, Saic, Polstar (volvo), geely, Byd.
Jaguar Land Rover - poor build quality, poor R & D
Ford, Another great one for terrible customer support.
Tesla, like most American brands they suffer poor build quality and are very anti consumer. New models to Australia are also made in china.
    Regards
    Daz
