My first brush with a Land Rover.

So I am sorting through some of my old slides and I came across this one.

Its the early 1970s and a mate and I were fanging around some dirt roads up at Kanangra Walls ( near Jenolan Caves ), in his just recently acquired Ex Highway Patrol Torana, when he misjudged a corner and we ended up in loose gravel.

We could not get enough traction to get back on the road but luckily for us some good people in a Land Rover came to the rescue.

    This was the scene!

Bit of a coincidence that. The Cook plus me and kids were out and about down at Leongatha many moons ago (nearly 50 years actually) when we got bogged in the company car I had. Toyota Corona from memory. Then along came an old bloke in a series Landie, hooked a strap around the suspension and gently pulled us to safety.
We were very thankful and offered some beer money but he was just happy to have been able to help us out. That really was our first experience of any 4 wheel drive and their capabilities.
Nice one mate, thanks to you and your Landie.

My high school geography teacher had a LR and would go exploring in the mountains during his holidays, and would come back with stories like a broken fuel pump and having to drive home with a jerry can of petrol feeding the carby on the roof rack, etc.

I would have been around 9 or 10 when my family stayed at Bruny Island (Tas) for a holiday. We visited the Lighthouse at the Sthn end and must have got there late arvo.

It was manned at that time and the lighthouse keeper invited Dad, mum, my sister and I up to the lighthouse and watch him light the lamp.

We were bundled in to what I realised many years later when I became an LR fanatic was a SWB Series 2 and he drove us up a rough road/track from his house about 1/2 klm from the lighthouse.

I was a bit concerned and felt as if I was about 20ft up in the air as I'd never been in such a "high" vehicle before! To make matters worse, the track went quite close to the cliff face.....

Anyway, we climbed the stairs and the 'keeper let me light the kero lamp, which I realised much later, was quite a big deal.

We got back down the hill safely and I lived to tell the tale.

Hmm,yes and the ticking noise we will never forget, and my father swearing and cursing when one failed.

We have just rebuilt two lately out of a box full of old ones, with some parts being refurbished.

They are the strangest pump i have ever seen, but i havent seen many old electric auto fuel pumps.

Morris Minor also had the dodgy Lucas fuel pump. A sharp whack was usually enough to scare it into action, until turned off.
