Can the country afford the Matildas winning?
The unprecedented viewer numbers reflects more on the rubbish on TV than the number of soccer fans in this country.
Most folk would be like me, not particularly interested in the code, but right behind an Australian win.
What will a holiday achieve, after the fact?

Nope. I’m not watching any of it.

Re Cathy Freeman’s run, I saw that for the first time last night when I was looking for something else on YouTube.

I have no interest in sport and couldn’t care less who wins anything - even motor racing.

I was there, sort of, but I couldn’t care less either.

Maybe we need a holiday for Pat Cash’s Wimbledon win, or Alan Jones’ F1 World Championship.

I'd have one for everytime Ricciardo or Piastri get on the podium!

That was only the quarter final. Imagine the size of the viewing audience if they can beat England to make it to the final.
That's only because there is nothing else on free to air TV , Thank goodness we have Brit Box & Netflix.

Supposedly it has brought a lot of money into the country and pro'ly for the types of businesses who need it most after covid as in food, beverage, travel and accommodation and retailers (of supporter's merchandise).

The holiday might be extra motivation for the Tillies to play even better for us, and if they win it will be just as historic as Aus winning the America's Cup in sailing.

I've been watching some of it, mostly the highlights which were on Ch 7 every day at 14-00 during the group games.

I think you are right Australians will get behind any team or individual at an international level.

We probably should have more sporting holidays as Roy and H.G. say, "too much sport is never enough".

How about genuine fans, ie people who were fans before the WC, are granted the day off to attend the final game.
A day off for the majority of the population, after the game is pointless. Nobody will be be doing anything WC related, on a public holiday, after the fact.
