    Importing a Rangie from the UK to Australia

    Hi all,

    I am currently on a professional exchange living in regional England for a year or so.

    I have fulfilled a dream and bought a 2007 L322 4.2 SC, it's in Lucerne green which I believe was a one year only colour (happy to be corrected). It's a high mileage example (210xxx miles) but has been well maintaned and not modifications from factory. I bought it for about half of what similar models are advertised for in Australia.

    The car is great to drive and I know that I will miss it on return (to Australia and to my RRC!)

    So I have turned my mind to privately importing it from England to Australia.

    Obviously there are the expenses of shipping it, then customs fees, holding fees, inspection fees, compliance fees, AC regas etc. I can imagine that all of those expenses would add up quickly to make the economic case rather poor. And perhaps I should just buy another 2007-09 4.2 SC on my return..
    But I do like that mine is a 'sorted' one, a known quantity, the devil that I know. I love the colour combination and the story behind cruising throught the English moors and highlands in what I view as the high watermark for Range Rovers.

    So, does anyone have any personal experience importing a car from Enlgand to Australia recently?
    - Which import company did you use?
    - What surprised you?
    - Would you do it again?

    Has the vehicle been thoroughly checked for rust in the usual areas - sills, rear wheel-arches, front and rear sub-frames? The salt used on UK roads is a rust hazzard with these vehicles whereas no or minimal rust issues with older L322s in Australia.

    You have to own AND OPERATE a vehicle for 12 months before you can bring it back. Holiday in Europe comes off time.
    They look at passport stamps.
    Many find the quarantine requirements the most onerous.

    I'd second the comment above re rust in anything imported form the UK or Europe due to salt being used to melt ice on roads. Had a friend moons ago who brought out a Merc saloon as he was astonished at the prices of them compared to here.
    6 Months or so later he was most disappointed to find rust appearing around all the door handles and windscreen.
    I would be very careful about importing it. Pity but it really is a hazard to be aware of.

    When we moved back from the UK about 15 years ago we brought our car back with us - my employer paid for the shipping but I don't recall the costs at this end (compliance and registration) being that bad.

    We had also shipped the car from Japan to the UK about a year earlier and I didn't think that the cost of the shipping (or the UK compliance) was that excessive. Of course, being the UK the shippers did lose the car for a couple of months but it did eventually turn up.

    Yeah I've had an independent Landy mechanic inspect and it does have sill rust... but fixable so I'll need to do my best with a spreadsheet of costs to see how it balances out. Hard to put a value on your time for all the faffing and forms that would inevitably come with importing it.
