I realised I was old just the other day when a couple of office staff were talking about the price of fish & chips. I said ‘Yeah, I remember when I could buy a potato cake & chip for 20 cents - which was in 1977 when I was in Primary School - there was a Milk Bar across the road and we used to get lunch there once a week.

The 2 discussing this (they are both around 30 - just looked at me blankly and one asked ‘How old are you anyway?’

At 53 I didn’t think I was there yet but I left work that day feeling older than I should have.
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.

I can remember when my parents never got more than sixpence worth of chips because that was plenty for both me and my twin!

I went to a training course a few months ago and one of the blokes before me had put his birthdate as 1998, so I tapped him on the shoulder and said, "That can't be right mate." thinking he'd made a mistake as it felt like just yesterday and he replied it was as he is only 24!

A bit more expensive than that when i was a kid,but it was probably a twice a year treat.Twenty cents was more than enough for a family of six.

I remember getting them one time as a kid, only because we were waiting for the Stradbroke Island barge,as it had broken down, and it was around 8.00Pm and we hadn't had dinner.
In those days, any complaint ended up with a clip around the ear,so one just got on with it,without complaining.....

Pretty much describes it in my childhood. We very rarely had chips.

As far as feeding starving kids, I remember once when we were coming home from camping at Narrabeen at Christmas - kids in the back of the Ford T truck, we must have been whingeing a bit, as it was lunchtime with no lunch, and we stopped at a shop. Mum got a loaf of fresh baked bread and handed it to us. The three of us proceeded to break the loaf in two, and eat the fresh bread by the handful, finishing up by tearing the crust to pieces and eating it. No doubt squabbling over distribution, although I don't remember that bit.

I remember at primary school my two sisters and I on rare occasions were allowed to buy lunch. For the princely sum of one and six we got "6 of chips and 6 of fritters (potato cakes) and a piece of fish. More than enough for the three of us.

    Hello All,

Well, what about when it cost 5 cents to buy a stamp and that covered all the postage costs of a standard letter. A letter that during weekdays would have two services a day in the form of either a morning or an afternoon delivery. Delivered by a Postie on their government issue pushbike.
