Domestic Travel Insurance - worth it or not?

    Hello All,

Just wondering whether people consider that domestic travel insurance is worth it?

I am going to flying from the local airport to Melbourne via a discount carrier. They only offer direct flights to and from Bundaberg to Melbourne and Melbourne to Bundaberg on Wednesday or a Sunday. Therefore, if the return flight from Melbourne to Bundaberg is cancelled I would have to wait until the following Wednesday before I could fly home with that carrier. I am flying from home one Sunday and returning home the next Sunday. I have a meeting on the Wednesday that a delayed flight from Sunday and possible rescheduling of the next outward bound flight on the next Wednesday would not work out. Because that is one of the days that I have to be in Melbourne. It is hard to attend an in-person meeting when one is mid-air at the time.

I am aware that the majority of travel insurance providers do not cover cancellations caused by the carrier. Supposedly, the carrier may reimburse you for flights that the company has cancelled.

So, given my travel plans - would travel insurance be worth the effort to arrange and worth the money? From my understanding if the flight home was cancelled by the carrier I would just be reimbursed and too bad how sad. The travel insurance would not cover the cost of accommodation or a hire car because the airline company cancelled the flight. Is this correct? If it is then it makes it a bit pointless adding the travel insurance bill to the cost of the flights. My concern is being stuck in Melbourne until the Wednesday before I could go on a rescheduled flight back home.

    Kind regards
    Lionel

For the reasons you state, in my view domestic travel insurance is pretty much pointless.

    Hello John,

Yes, it seems that the thing I would need most is something that they do not provide travel insurance coverage for. An airline cancelling a flight - just because they can. Then subsequently having to wait three days before the same flight is scheduled again. In the meanwhile there is the unexpected overnight accommodation to pay for while I am away from home. Or the cost of a hire car if one cannot wait the three nights, cooling one's heels. From my reading of the policies if the airline cancels the only thing you can expect is a reimbursement and the travel insurance will not cover any additional expenses.

Sort of as handy as having a pocket in a singlet.

    Kind regards

They offer an add-on that covers accomodation etc if you cannot complete the journey.

Given recent issues people had with The Flying Kangaroo on that very issue that's quite a supposition.
