Took a 50% pay cut but much happier and now I’m a brewing consultant selling brewing equipment and help new small breweries start up.

Am now going to ramp up attending woodworking evening classes once per week so I can test my next career possible change to a furniture maker as we’re doing a tree change in 2 months and I’ll have a nice big shed to play in 😊.

If the market wasn't so saturated already i'd consider becoming a craft brewer.

    Wink

There’s still plenty of room in the market for small local brewpubs or brew cafes where you’re selling everything over the bar by the pint. My most profitable customers are in regional tourist towns.

But building a production brewery to sell kegs to pubs - not a good idea anymore!

At age 50 last year I took redundancy from a certain blue oval car company.
I'd escaped a few previous rounds of job cuts, including one a few years ago by accepting a move from a team management position back to being 'just' an engineer.
This time around I realised there'd be no chance of working my way back up the ladder again and the only jobs the company was offering were a 5-6hr round trip away (no more working from home!).
So I decided I was still young enough to try my luck at something other than engineering and I'm currently studying again.

And if that fails, I've also recently done barista training (because, why not?), so I could fall back on feeding people's coffee addictions late in life career change - have you considered it?

I made my career change 23 years ago by retiring. Plenty of work to do now and although I don't get paid for any of it, I can, to a certain extent please myself when I do it. The trouble is that 'other more interesting/desirable things' seem to pop up and take priority so the work often gets rescheduled! I've had a few jobs that have been on the 'to do' list for over 20 years ....... oh-well you can't rush these things.

Must get back to packing for the next trip...........I just realised we leave in less than a week.

Admittedly, I have been doing a job where I used to be damn good at for quite a bit too long after I no longer enjoyed it. The money kept me in, as it always does.

I am currently considering one last stint that MIGHT bring me a bit more joy before I set off on my journey. When I started on this path I always thought that I could and would return to my current profession but I am not sure at this time. Then again that is a long time away so -eh- why bother thinking about that right now

One (painful) lesson I have learned is that it is great to make a job out of your hobby, but there is a good chance that over time it will no longer be your hobby... Funny thing is, the only part of my "job" that I still like is the hobby things I do in the field

I digress. The hardest part I think for me personally is that I have always been a hard worker. 14 hour days, 7 days a week etc. I have slowed down with old age, sure, but at this point the fun has been leeched out of my profession at such a level that I have little to no faith in another "job" anymore. One could say I am burned out on work in general. I know I still have it in me because when doing volunteer work I still put in 101%

So yes, I have considered it but nearly always the money argument won. Lately the promise of realizing my life's work/dream has kept me going but the end is definitely in sight!

    Cheers,
    -P
