Today on #anzacday we remember all those Donegal men and women far from home, who served with the ANZAC Forces (the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) during the #FirstWorldWar and all those who never returned and those who survived.
Far from County Donegal, on the NW coast of Turkey lies the Gallipoli Peninsula, then part of the Ottoman Empire, where on April 25th, 1915, the Gallipoli Campaign began. The Gallipoli (or Dardanelles) Campaign took place between April 1915 and January 1916. In an attempt to secure a sea route to the Russian Empire, the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force was formed from the volunteer Australian and New Zealand Army Crops (Anzac). The plan was to take the Gallipoli Peninsula with a military force composed of Australian, New Zealand, British, French and Indian soldiers. A naval attack was to be followed by landings on the peninsula. The naval attack was repelled and after eight months of fighting the land campaign failed. The Gallipoli offensive resulted in heavy losses for the Allies forces - for many families there was no grave to visit their sons, brothers, husbands and fathers who were killed far away from their #Donegal.

Certain elements are trying to shut down the whole ANZAC thing. A look at the number of young people attending the various Services on Wednesday suggests that it isn't working.

Never underestimate the quiet majority who know their great grandparents traded their lives for their countries freedom. Unfortunately if things keep going the way they're going we'll not longer be the majority. The new imports have no skin in the game.
