There is a small place near here called Laheys Ck.
Most people pronounce it Lay-ees, but the people who actually live there seem to pronounce it Lack-ees.
I wonder if this is about like the property next door to us here - the name of it is "Glenalvin", but all the published maps spell the name "Glenaluin", apparently from a misprint on the first topographic map to show it about sixty years ago.
John, to me, Glenalvin looks the same as Glenalvin. Am I missing something?

My Mum, who spoke very " correct " English ( impossible, imo ), told a story of an Englishman having dinner with his American girlfriend's family. They asked him what he did for a living. He replied, I'm a clerk. They said, " a what" He repeated that he was a clerk. They said, you mean like the thing on the wall that goes "tick, tark?".
I grew up saying 'darnce' and plarnt' etc. That was ok at a posh school; not so good in the Army where people looked at me as if I had just beamed down from the Enterprise.
In Melbourne we have a suburb called Malvern. In Adelaide they have one as well. Do they sound the same? Nope.
In Melbourne we have a suburb called Berwick. In Perth I was talking to my in-laws about a street I had used as a short cut called Berwick road. They couldn't work it out until I spelled it for them. "Oh, you mean Burr Wick?" No, I mean Berrik.
Sigh.
Do you know the old description of the relation between Britain and the USA?

The same could be said for two states here, especially when it comes to pronunciation of place names.
It depends on how much shopping you've done there Ron. If you have shopped there it's probably a hard 'G'. Most other people it would be a soft 'G'.Quote:
