It is named after the Indian town, so no surprise there. In the 19th century there were a lot of ties between Australia and the British Raj in India. For example, some of my wife's ancestors had family branches in SA and India, and a thriving business selling Australian bred horses to the Indian Army.

Clivia should be pronounced as in Clive not as in Cliff as they were named after the Duchess of Northumberland, Lady Charlotte Clive, who first cultivated the plant in England and provided the flowers for the type specimen.

I've heard it pronounced many ways, none of them close to the phonetic spelling.

Well. a relly on my Dad's side of the genes was Viceroy of India, for a time.

When Helen and I visited Alnwick (pronunciation) Castle, we saw a wedding portrait of one of the Percy lassies marrying a Captain of The Guard, or such, who had my Dad's surname.

When I got back home, I asked him whether this may explain some of the traits of certain descendants.

    He didn't find it amusing.
