It is named after the Indian town, so no surprise there. In the 19th century there were a lot of ties between Australia and the British Raj in India. For example, some of my wife's ancestors had family branches in SA and India, and a thriving business selling Australian bred horses to the Indian Army.

I've heard it pronounced many ways, none of them close to the phonetic spelling.
