I've had a fantastic experience with boat ownership as in my friends owned boats.

At least Penta is still based in Sweden. Volvo cars not so much.

The D71 is based on the truck motor, so the internals are pretty easy to get. The ancilliaries (pumps, HX, Aftercooler, water cooled exhaust manifold) are getting harder to source given they were a current model in 1996. A basically mechanically injected 6 pot diesel is pretty easy to maintain in the scheme of things.

My mate has a 13 year old Maritimo with Volvos current at the time. Multiple computers and other bits to go wrong, service software only available to accredited agents and a Volvo tax on every service visit where a computer needs to be plugged in. Marginally more fuel efficient (we're talking a percent or two at best).

So I'll stick with the cray boat motors.

I did speak to an agent about the options for a re-power when these become uneconomical to keep going, but he says out of all the common ones "Cummins, Cat, Volvo, MAN & Yanmar" Volvo have the most affordable parts.

These are commercial boat motors designed for multiple lifespans of the current pleasure boat motors so I figure if I look after them they'll probably out-last me.

    Hi,
Went out on a ferro-cement yacht as a guest once. I enjoyed the sailing experience, feeling the power of the wind.
The water level in the galley sink plug hole pulsing up and down however reminded me that all this thing wanted to do was dive to the sea bed given any opportunity whatsoever.
At least in the Landrover I can get out and walk.
    Cheers

You get Zero Sympathy from me Brad. You mentioned Rottnest Island and Sympathy went on the spot you lucky lucky Bastard

My boat, trailer, tires, petrol, bait are wallet emptying fun Trying never to sink one after my dad sunk at least 3

One the sinking side as I am often in my wetsuit I would survive warmly if I ever do make a mistake perhaps.

A weekend away is on offer if you make it over this way and have time. Few nice dive spots, although I haven't blown bubbles for a few decades, so would need to rent some kit.

    I agree.

A kayak or canoe only creates a very small hole in the water, so it only takes a tiny amount of money.

I'll stick with something this size.

He managed to come through with enough parts to rebuild the pump this afternoon, so down to mums to re-assemble pump. All went like clockwork, so onto the boat to re-assemble. Turns out the bracket was dodgied into place previously and there was no way known to man the pump pulley was going to line up with the crank pulley, so spent an hour playing with spacers and washers to get it to line up, hoses back on and fire it up.

Back in 2023 dad had the gen serviced and they fitted an A38 fan belt. After 20 hours of use in 2024 that shreded, destroyed the soundproofing and cut a slot in one of the raw water hoses. My brother was at Rottnest, so we sourced another A38 belt and sent it over. When I pulled the back off to get to the pump yesterday the belt was about half belt and about half rubber dust plugging up the whole rear of the engine. The tensioner slot on the alternator was hard over and the belt was "quite loose". I checked the Yanmar service manual to find it was supposed to be an A36, so I fitted one of those and tightened it up. It's still over 80% on the tensioner, so there was no way in hell a 38 was going to tighten up. I reckon the mechanic just levered the alternator out until it stopped "that'll be tight enough" and called it good, resulting in a dead belt in 10's of hours.

Bloody mechanics working on stuff they don't really have the data or understanding to work on.

My sister in laws old man made a cat out of 44 gallon drums welded together and used to use it to take his mates and their girls to Rottnest. He dined out on that story for the entire time I knew him.
