Hey Ron,
I work in Port Melb, I could have a look at it lunch time tommorrow if it helps.
If you pm with specifics of what you want checked im happy to help out.
My daughter's Peugeot 405 has dropped a cylinder - probably broken rings (happened when I was using it to go to work.
She needs transport for a bit longer until she moves to Derby in February.
There's a 405 for sale in Melbourne which might suit http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI....MEWA%3AIT&rd=1
I thought that if it is OK, I'll go down and drive it back. I don't want to get down there to find its a heap of rusted rubbish. If needs be I can swap the engine across to my daughter's car (a 1989 405).

Hi Rob, that's greatly appreciated.
Checks?
For that price I'm not expecting perfection. I can swap some stuff between the car we have and that one. I'll need to drive back to Sydney so I'd want to make it.
Does the engine run OK, not blowing smoke? Does it drive OK? Not using water or overheating - I don't want to have to pull a head off for a blown head gasket (this is something you can't check in the timeframe available).
As you are doing it in your lunch break, all I can reasonably expect from you is a visual report on the car. Does it look OK before I commit to a train or plane ride to Melbourne? I don't want that's full of rust - which it shouldn't be as they have offered a RWC (for another $500) in their advert.
If I can register it here, that's a bonus otherwise I'll use its engine for my daughter's car.
Thanks again
Ron

Oh dear, never mind. It has now been sold but they haven't killed the eBay advert.
Thanks very much for the offer but no longer required.
I had tried to ring them earlier but the number in their eBay advert didn't work (it may be barred to interstate numbers).

No probs. Ron, sorry we couldnt get it happening for you.
Nah, my fault. I was too slow.
Looks like I'll have to pull the head off the Pug. I hate OHC east-west engines. So much easier to work on normal OHV engines.
At least on my old XK Jags, it was easy to leave all the timing chain and sprockets in place when the head came off. The engine was designed with provision to do that.
What's worse is that we had (paid for it) the water pump replaced recently so the timing belt and associated stuff had to come off then.
Any cheap mechanics out there?
