    amazing stat!

I saw a policeman on telly the other day, saying how effective the NSW Highway Patrol is. Anyhow, he said that in the past twelve months, coppers had nabbed 70,000 drivers for driving without a licence!

The number of 'driving an unregistered vehicle' was similar, strewth...

A few months ago the coppers up here set up a scan camera (on the Pacific Hwy near Byron Bay) which checks number plates - apparently a new gizmo - and in one day collected about 80 unregistered vehicles. The fine is, I think, $1000. No bad for a days work.

70,000 busted! How many more didn't get busted?

    G'day All

That is truely a frightening statistic particulary when you realise that if involved in an accident there is no 3rd Party cover, when injuries occur and if they are bad you are relegated to a Civilian Pension (Disablity Support) and it isn't fun, I know that from experience.

A woman I know, driving an old (late '70s) Corolla was hit by a guy in a Troopie - the Corolla was cactus - he tried to take off but was stopped by other drivers.

She went ballistic and wanted the cops - the bloke pulled out a wad of cash, gave her $3000 on the spot and departed.

Her hubby, a solicitor, did some searching and later discovered the Troopie was unregistered and had been for years and the last registered owner was a wanted man, a violent dude with a long history... she was lucky in so many ways.

We can tell when the cops have been active around here - the roadsides are littered with (generally) older cars with number plates removed.

The figure sounds rather high to me - they regularly quote the figures for random breath tests locally - remember they check your licence when they test you - and while they certainly get a few unregistered and unlicenced, the numbers are very small compared to above .05 or speeding. And this is in the country, where I'll bet there are a lot more unregistered and unlicenced drivers. And of course, the problem with the unlicenced is that the vast majority are unlicenced because they have had it taken off them.

Unregistered may be frightening because they are uninsured - but they are probably no more likely to have an accident than any other vehicle, perhaps less if they are trying to avoid attention (although I'll bet most 'unregistered' are just people who have failed to renew on time, often inadvertently) - but most of the unlicenced drivers are ones that have been legally removed from the road because they are dangerous. And some of them I have known slightly really are dangerous.

But the number quoted does sound rather high.

According to ABS in 2003 there were 10.4 million in the whole of Australia. If NSW represents, say, 30%, that would be 3.12 Million in NSW and 70,000 would represent a bit over 2%. This is not unbelievable as the total number unregistered in the state, but I would have difficulty believing a catch rate over perhaps 10% - and I seriously doubt that 20% of the vehicles on the road are unregistered!

statistics something l failed twice in three attenpts at University

First its 70,000 unregisterd vehicles of the number of cars actually stopped, checked, photgraphed by police not 70,0000 of the 10 million registered cars in oz or the 30% of the 10 million supposedly in NSW.

Secondly if your in an accident your ususally driving in your vehicle which is presumable registered so coverage for personal injury under third party system would apply. Plus if you have comprehensive or third party property or eprsonal insurance you have coverage for your vehicle and passengers as well.

Thirdly drivers without licenses or driving unregistered vehicles highlights the defect in the legal system and we should simply impound the vehicle for the length of the drivers disqualification. If your caught driving without a license in someone else car they lose the car for the period of your disqualificaiton and should be fined for providing you wiht a car like being an accessory to a crime.

Fourthly highlights our social problem in that death casued by bad driving is covered by catch all phrase it was an accident rather than reckless driving, too high speed, driving while drunk and so on. Kill someone by any other means usually looking at 7 to 12 years inside kill 1 or more people with a car you get no more than 3 years and usually 1 year.

We require in some states for cars to go over the pits in annual inspections but no one ever gets re-tested as driver, we should put everyone on driving simulators and road law testing once every 5 years at least in order to be able to drive.

If you want to pull a caravan, horse float or trailer you should be tested for ability to tow park and reverse with the dam things.

Biggest complaint is that we have different state license laws for cars and drivers we should in today age of computer databases have single National system.

    G'day Folks
My understanding of 3rd Party Insurance is: Driver(you) 1st Prty, Driver other vehicle 2nd Prty, Passenger/s 3rd prty/s so any accident with an unregistered/uninsured vehicle the passengers miss out, so if you're regoed, the other not, your passengers miss out.
