It will cruise happily at 105-110kph in fifth, and 120 if pressed. One of the reasons the Aus. Army selected them was cold start capability in extreme cold conditions. Waiting for glow plugs to warm up whilst being shot at is a bit of a turn-off. Also, a well proven fact is that big capacity naturally aspirated slow revving engines live longer than tiny highly pressurised ones. Big bore slow revving American engines and power trains are the choice of the outback trucking industry, unfortunately without turbocharging they are too heavy to make 600hp, otherwise nat. aspiration & mechanical injection would be the choice of outback operators. My experience with turbocharged and supercharged race engines is that you reach a point of diminishing return, where more boost is producing insufficient power to justify the added unreliability, problems, and expense. what we found with the turbo Offys was that increasing the boost pressures over the already very high figures only pumped more heat into the engine. We were already using high fuel flow rates and latent heat of evaporation (methanol blends) as part of thecooling system. For an outback vehicle the KISS principle should be first and foremost in the designers mind.
Yea naturally aspirated, mechanical pumped diesels are the way to go

Thats why all new trucks run common rail EFI and big stinkin' turbo's

And next time you are out in the big bush with a flat battery, or a failure of a three cent component in the vehicle management computer, think about how you are going to start the beast, or how far is the walk back to Boulia or Jundah. My County-Isuzu does not need electricity to start or run, just as long as you can pull, push, or roll it to start. I am fed up with electrical/electronic failures in modern vehicles. That is why I maintain that a true bush vehicle should be sans electronics.

I think they are all good, the D3 is by far the most capable Landy off the show room floor, but the electronics mean you can plough through mud the way you would in a defender or and early disco. The Classic Rangie was way ahead of its time and surpassed all expectation both on and off road for so long it too 20 odd yrs to create a new one. But the Disco 1 is a top rig all round, built on a classic rangie, good engine with the TDi, and with a set of good muddies will go a helluva lot of places.

Mind you i wouldny say no to Slunnies truck.

My vote goes for the Series IIA Military version, easily repaired, good engine, gear & transfer case. Body panels easily replaced (if you can fine new ones).

.......and I can put the hose in it to clean it out

does anyone else think its funny the best LR is always covered with mud--

    on the inside?

    oh,, I see.
its from attaching straps to bogged Toyomotors

    oh,
    and the D1.

if best can be described as most important,
then the D1 saved LR's bacon.
