I brought the 2001 Defender in a private sale that had 2.5 years remaining on a extended warrenty with ASWN. I checked that it could be transfered prior to sale.

It was a hassle to transfer, or so I thought with a engineering and mech report required ($80), and ASWN giving me what i have to adhere to, plus it was 4,000 over service when i brought it. After going through this and knowing they didn't cover leaks or overheating and required 10,000km service I almost cashed it in.

One fuel pump later ($880 plus $120 for towing), both front door latches replaced and a new indicator switch it has been more than worth it, and I still have 1.5 years to go on the policy. In regards to the required services below LR intervals I actually think this is a positive and will pay off in the longevity of my car. And you don't need to go to the dealer, just a registered mechanic for servicing.

Wilst they seemed difficult at first ASWN have been fantastic when it's comes to forking out the cost. They just pay direct to an agreed mechanic, and in one case it was a mechanic I chose as I was not happy with thier recommendation.

So for $1,000 i would say jump at it if you want to keep the car long-term and are not in a position to undertake regular services and repairs yourself.

Personally I think it is cheap peice of mind. Even though my farther is a mechanic with the TD5 we still could not do all of the servicing ourself and it it's not so bad that they make you stick to regular intervals. By the way I went 3,000 over on one and no drama.

Also things like the door latches and indicator switch I had replaced I would never had done if I had to pay myself, and their the kind of things that annoy me years later when you have a car with a thousand little things that are kind of not quite right.

My thoughts anyway. If I was a mechanic that lived in the city close to parts, it was a 300Tdi and I was going to thrash it and sell off in a few years then i would not consider it worth $1,000.

Tell the dealer to take off $1,000 for the vehicle to cover the cost of the warrenty. Then he really is throwing it in.

to be honest i would be more worried about the asking price...

Landrovers tend to be more expensive in WA (from what i saw before buying mine) i picked mine up real cheap for $22.5k a 2002 td5 auto with 80k km and full dealer service history... admittedly it had a cracked bumper but its not that much to replace.... its also dry underneath....

now i know a 2003 is a facelift model... but does it really justify that much more money? or is it the top of the line one?

if the dealer cant knock some money off and throw in the warranty... well i'd be walking away...

    just my 2 cents worth...

    Thanks

    Steve

Watch the wording of it too. I bought a Freelander(no jokes pls) i was told that the head gaskit had just been replaced and everything checked but i still paid for the extended warrenty, well 2mths later the timing belt snapped and it was not coverd as they only cover chains not belts. Fair enough but what ticks me is that when they did the head work they didn't replace the timing belt and i only found out after the event. I know i shouldn't have assumed but you'd think that if you had it appart any way and the belt was near the end you' replace it, well i would. So my "warrenty" was worth nothing, going through it there wasn't much i could claim for for that particular vehicle cause of the wording of what it coverd. A D2 is a completly different vehicle but still make sure of what it actually covers. (on a side note the new Timing belt in the Freelander let go exactly a week after having the head rebuilt and i had to do it all again!!)
