Not workable in the long term??? I would suggest that the long term will see cars being diagnosed remotely, even repaired that way. The days of the bush mechanic will be replaced by the bush hacker ...........


To the present, your argument relies on the D3 software/electrics being as vunerable as non-owner fixible mechanic issuess of present-day Rovers. And my point is that there is no evidence of this. You are more likely (in my experience) to break a non-fixible mechanical component on a D1/Rangie/Defender than get a show-stopping software issue on a D3 (based on current data). Like it or not, electronic systems are less prone to failure than mechanical systems, providing their operational parameters are not exceeded. And that's where driver education steps in.

Yes, Electriconic components do not wear at the rate of mechanical and the D3 utilises a lot of fibre optics, which wear even less.

Just how far into the D3 brains can you get with the canbus ?

ie: can you customise and over-ride body / suspension stuff ?? It would be cool to actually regain complete control of a D3 beastie.

canbus has been around in industry for quite a few years now, someone must have some d3 hacks ?

Firstly let me say that yes I don't own a D3 and secondly I have been unable to test drive one (thanks to some very, very dodgy salesman at several LR dealers around the country...but thats another story).

If you re-read my posts you will note that I don't bag the electronics, rather I am concerned that there evolution hasn't completed yet. Someone else mentioned that they reset themselves to a reasonable extent, great! There are still issues with any electronics on vehicles at present and the main issue is they need (in the case of the some vehicles) dealer specific software. I don't want to think how much Testbook would cost, I'm looking down the barrel of $3K for Rovacom lite for my Td5. I would love to own a D3, but my geographical location makes it prohibitively costly. Would you ship (i.e. by sea) your car to a dealer every time it needs to be serviced?

No there is nothing wrong with the D3, it is ahead of its time, but there is still an evolution in progress.

20 years ago, as automotive electronics was finally starting to take off, one of the arguments being use to get the auto makers to increase their use of electronics in vehicles, was the fact that the electronics ( back then ) was 100x more reliable than the mechanical counterparts.

So how many times better are they now, probably around 1000x more reliable.

The D3 mechanically is practically unbreakable from what the magazines have said, i think over engineered was one comment, if that is the case and a few electronic gremlins is all that may be encountered off road then i thinks thats a good thing. Matt

I'm sure they are and I don't know how many mechanics I've heard say that now days they're training is more computer related on new vehicles.

Didn't realise there was fibre optics on the D3 (luckily they nolonger use glass fibre :twisted: ). All adds to reliability.
