Dawg sit down and remember the excitement when you first got you license. You said it was not her fault so you can not be too hard on her. I would go after the other p plate driver for the $1500 excess. The insurance company should do this for you when they go after him for the rest. I would chat to them. Failing that I would pull his head off. Still a valuable lesson and I would be telling her that if she wants another car that she is going to have to earn the extra. Schoolies week is stupidest idea I have ever seen and our greedy local businesses should take some responsibility for promoting it. Police resources are put under so much pressure and if a lot of these kids can not behave lock em up for a week.
However if the accident had been her fault, I would be saying tough luck now you buy your own.
My parents loaned us the money to buy our first cars, but we had to repay and did not miss a payment. We had V8 s too but respected them.
Writing the car off has probablly scared the ****e out of her. Still needs her backside kicked for taking the car when told not to.

Speaking of respect for others property. I got my first speeding fine in my old mans brand new sportscar.

Luckily the copper pulled me over after I was slowed down (due to scaring myself shytless)

In retrospect I was being a frigging idiot, but the mentality of an 18yr old in a car with a high power to weight ratio is a scary thing.

Get her to buy a little 4 cyl 4bee (like a series, Zook or a rocky or something)
and a full exocage could give her protection as well as a shame value till she has learnt her lesson.

Dad gave memy first car, his old landy, im sorry i sold it even tho it was tired..

I had to pay all rego and running costs and put the bloody thing back together...

Allthough , IMHO, it will seem unfair to her give her the "I gave you the car, its a privlidge you have to pay for not a right you are gifted. It may have not been your fault but it is your responsability." speech, offer some time and some contacts to help get it fixed but let her sort it out off of her back with the insurance mob.

She may resent you now but will appreciate the experience later in life.

I know I did when dad did it to me after I fragged my first SIII gearbox.

I agree, i certainly wouldnt let my child go, nor would i advise any other parent to let theirs go. Schoolies is an accident waiting to happen.

Back to the car thing, was the person who caused the accident insured? Matt

I can't speak from a parents point of view, but I can from a teenagers.

I didn't have my own car for a long time, I had to beg and borrow my parents cars for some time. In the end dad did buy my brother and I a vehicle to share (That is another story) but it was still his, and was bought for towing (the S3 FFR I have now). Ironically I then was given a subaru and I ended up with the subaru. However I was reasonably responsible, took responsibility for the damage that I did do (came off the road once) and repaired what needed to be repaired etc etc. In many ways it was a reward for good behaviour and common sense.

By brother on the other had had a nack for destroying vehicles. He in fact had his 1.2 share of the land rover removed as he was doing too much damage (and dad and I saw him cornering it on 2 wheels one day when we were on our way home from work :lol2:) So far he has killed the parents barina (auto gearbox), 2 S3 SWB landies (engine in one, gearbox in the other and a few axles) and 2 range rovers (both engines). And he is only 23!!!! Finally he was made to do his on repairs and be without a vehicle with the range rover. he had to get an engine, take the old one out and put the new one in. He it a little more carefull now, although that was only about 2 months ago.

Let them know that you are disapointed and ask them what they think is a fair resolution to the situation.

Given that the prang wasn't her fault, I would make her pay (off) the excess and buy the new car and hope she has learnt her lesson. We all did silly things as kids.

So..... she was told not to drive the car... but she did. If she followed instructions this would not have happened.

Our community has been thru the terrible trauma of seeing four good kids die in a crash, where the driver was overdoing it, fell off the road and killed his four mates, but he survived. Again the kids were not where hey were supposed to be...(and another end of year 12 'statistic', this time South of Byron Bay).

Insurance will cover the Commodore - the driver at fault will be sued for the $1500 excess and your daughter will get off scott free, which may be legally right, but.....frankly she should walk for a while, but that wont happen, other kids have cars and she'll be a passenger, oh dear........

Let her walk or use public transport for a while, it may not have been her fault but she lied and that is worse. I was working at 16 and have bought my own vehicles since then although dad has helped out with repairs and parts ( he is in the auto industry). My parents always told my 3 brothers and i " we dont care where you go or what you just let someone know where you are ". Track that P plater down and make him take responsibilty for his actions.

Bugger its a shame the dunnydore was written off but its her fault for taking it but your lucky its insured id make her walk 4 a bit to punish her till u get the insurance through then buy her a swb series 2 or 3 till she is financial to get her own veh that way when she is finished with the series u get another project car and that way no one else will want to drive it and if another dunnydore prangs into it she can laugh it off and drive home only down side is u will have another veh to maintain and think of the experience she will gain driving a series landy and at least she will pull blokes you might be able to get along with not rev head ******* ....
