There's virtually no difference, if at all, in the electronics in the 4.6 HSE, the 4.0 SE & the 4.0.

The 4.0 has manual seats but still has the EAS & climate control the others have.

They have a bad name but they are very under-rated.
Saying that though; if I didn't have contacts in parts, I don't think I could afford to run one as an everyday car.

I think, Matt, that the worry is not so much what problems you are likely to have, as how expensive it WILL be if you have ANY problem. While I have no experience of them, it seems that much of their construction was designed without thought as to how they would be repaired (e.g. Ron's heater) and unlike a number of other Landrover products, they were not made in large enough numbers to attract third party suppliers plus a stock of second hand parts.

And you got it for a good deal witch helps numb the pain if you have the bad luck to repair it at the price you paid its still a good car if you spent 6 k on repairs which i hope you dont

The early 4.0 SE had manual temp/AC controls whilst the HSE had climate control. Later SEs had climate control.

The HSE has electrically controlled leather seats, sunroof, and traction control, better stereo (11-speaker with CD stacker), headlight wash/wipers.

However, specs may have varied with the market. For example, overseas HSEs had heated seats an electrically heated front screen. Not so Australian models.

There was a cheap version ($80,000 ) called an S if I recall correctly.

For info on repairs and outfitting one, look at http://rangerovers.net - you'll find my name splattered liberally around the site having done a number of repairs and having written lies on how to do the repairs.

I see where a lot of people with newer vehicles have to take them to the stealers all the time to et the faults diagnosed and cleared.
I have seen things advertised on Ebay that claim they can read and clear all fault codes for about $150 - has anybody bought one of these?
It seems they come with a standard plug fitting, but does it fit the Land Rovers?
I can't find an ad for it at the moment, but I will keep looking and post it here if I find it.

This wasn't the one I was looking (it had just a small handheld black head unit) but this seems like it should work.
    AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
I can't work out how to post a link. Maybe I should read the directions on using the site.
Anyway search for the Ebay user AutoMobile Workshop.

The defender was just a possibility and would have worked at the time had the money come through, the P38a is a maybe, this thread is more of a discussion thing, but i wouldnt mind one. I wasnt looking at D3's, was just curious as to see what the S/H market prices are for them, and noticed that most were the petrol 6. Matt
