i could of sworn there was a toll on the fwy coming from Geelong
maybe i should venture over that side of town more often

it's actually a suburb called Port Melbourne and your destination is Station Pier.

and...

Torquay is not quite Geelong, it's about 35 km's away down the surfcoast and you don't have to go into Geelong to get there especialy if you are driving direct on your journey south. I'd consider going Albury - Sheparton - Bendigo - Daylesford - Ballarat - outer Geelong - Torquay if you have the time as it's more interesting than sitting on a highway at 110 km/hr.

*edit* 55 surf coast highway is in Geelong, not Torquay... 55 surf coast road is in Torquay on the right hand side of the main drag just after all of the factory outlet surf shops (ripcurl billabong etc..)

In order to pay tolls, you would really have to ignore all the signs on how to get to Geelong while travelling south and end up on the Tullamarine freeway heading into inner city Melbourne, as mentioned earlier in the thread, you follow the Hume highway to the Western Ring road and follow it to the Princes Highway and then follow the Prices HWY to the outskirts of Geelong where it turns off to the 'Surfcoast - Torquay, Lorne, Great Ocean Road' Even if you stuffed up and ended up in Geelong's CBD, it's only a little city and you can't really get lost there... Torquay is significantly smaller - the main road follows the beach and all the accomdation etc is there, you simply cannot get lost, it aint possible.

Just a word of advice. If you are camping around Tassie in December/January and have not got a fixed itinerary with booked campsites then you might be in for some trouble.
When I was there we quickly learned that the caravan parks fill up very quickly so even though we had no fixed time frame or stops we decided it would be best to decide in the morning where we want to camp that night and ring ahead. Even then we sometimes missed out on spots.
We spent some nights in free camp grounds with no facilities which I would prefer as opposed to the crowded tent cities that my Wife prefers. However to quell the uprising if we stayed somewhere with no facilities we would 'visit' the facilities at a nearby caravan park for a shower.

No tolls, just plenty of speed cameras under some of the overpasses, some you can see as you drive towards them, the others are hidden so you can't see them until you've driven past.
