Supercheap Disco (LR Disease has set in)

Ok Just back from Looking at said Disco I was talking about in other site/thread. I also have pics if anybody is interested....I just cant post them here

    4/97 SE 300TDi, Man.
    221k, Alloys, 7 seater,
Drivers Air Bag only, HD Tow Bar.
Gray Int & clean, brand new clutch.

Motor buggerd due to over heating, back two bore's are very badly scored and block has been tested and that cly area is very soft....and the motor has been striped down.

There is rust coming through around the alpine windows, right side has just a few little bubbles and the left has much more about 100mm long and just breaking the paint work. I have pics if anybody can tell us if its an easy fix for the rust.

There are few small dents.....just the norm shopping trolly type and there are alot of stone chips and scratch's around the whole car......but I think most will buff out.

Will need new tyres, which I have a few in the shed, int is clean and everythnig seems to be there and all elec windows work etc.

Font left bumper has taken a little hit....just enough to break the headlight washer. I have no idea what she is like underneth as Marie didnt let my climb under to have a look (on the way to another bloody xmas do)

I think with a little work and $ this would be a very good offroader. Marie even said "Why cant we pull all the off road gear of our current Disco and put it all on the new one?? , So I can drive the Auto all the time?"

But.....what are the chance's of finding another good low km 300 top put in it? Or would I be better off finding another block and try and find someone to rebuild it? Or how about dumping a chev TD in the Disco?

I was even thinking about going to the auction's to buy a wreck.....any idea's bloke's?

What do you think....worth more thought do you think? Happy to hear honest comments

If its cheap enough it would be a good candidate for a HS2.8 conversion, but only if you can get it for 2-3k- with what you have said i wouldnt pay any more for it.

From what limited knowledge I have read on this forum an over-heated tdi is a major problem waiting to happen. The heads can warp and all sorts of nasties... I would be exceptionally wary and see what other experts on this forum reckon.

Yes it sounds good but, after you get the engine rebuilt or replaced(usually a new clutch at the same time since the engine is out) and get the body bodged or fixed up for registration, would it still be a cheap car? There'd be at least 5 grands worth of work to be done. I saw a near perfect tdi disco with a few goodies go a few months back for $8000.00.

My disco is the same age, with a few more k's on it- and I've recently repaired the alpine windows - they are easy to remove, and it's plain metal there - normal single layer rust repairs apply. There is a TDi engine on ebay for 3k, but I've also seen that age Disco complete for...wait for it.. 17k. As is, 3.5k would be the max I'd spend - figure 3k for another Tdi engine (Don't bother with a rebuild) and another 1k for time and running around - which makes expending $7500 about right for that age disco - any more and you'd be better off buying a complete car.

engine is a boat anchor - one of the blokes here sells 2.8 TDi 's from brazil for a fair price - that would be my option

Dont worrie bloke's...Im just at the "Is it worth it" stage.

He had $5k on it to start with.....as soon as I rang he droped it down to $4k without me even asking about how neg he is.

If I can get it for $2-$3k I would feel better about it. As he said he cant be botherd with it so I might get a real bargin.

But I want to really think about it and Im gratful for commets, anyway nobody out this would even think about it......one good think about living out here with mostly Toyta & nissan drivers.

Landrovermick.....whats one of those 2.8's worth?

Also can you just get short motors in a 300? Is a short still just the basic motor without acc ie alt , stater, fuel pump etc?
