    New Year @ Rainbow

    So there were a bunch of people going to Fraser - was anybody planning to go to Rainbow beach? Or Inskip? Or should I just carry on to Fraser? Not taking extra time off this year so was toying with going up just for the weekend. I realise it will be quite busy but is it insane this year, does anyone know? Last time I had a look at Rainbow for Easter last year it was incredibly overcrowded, there were people camping on the foredunes and NPWS still happily sold me camp permit, was dissapointed & disgusted with them, but that's a whole other story.

    Camping on the mainland part of that area is just insane! They're all piled up ontop of each other. If you head over to the island it thins right out. There are a lot of people over there between Xmas and NY but its still pretty good and there is still plenty of camping. Ignore the signs that say the camping areas are full, most of the time you can still get in, and if you cant, then there are heaps of other spots around the place that you can use, mainly the coast.

    There are also pretty good facilities scattered throughout the island at the main locations.

    Strewth! Mebby I'm just tight but I usually travel off-peak & the barge is as little as $10, ATM it is $75, plus beach permit & camp fees of course.

    I'm a bush camper normally and don't like suburban camping, but if it's packed out I may as well go to a campground with facilities & be done with, so what are the camp grounds like at Eurong/One tree rocks? It's not too far up so I can do the run on LPG .
    Are there showers, etc? Any other spots better though?

    I'm not sure if there is camping at Eurong, its more of a village. There is the beach outside of Eurong, though you need to be a short distance away IIRC. In the south, I would head to places like Lake Boomanjin and setup at about midday to procure your spot. It puts you pretty close to two of the nicest lakes on the Island IMHO, being Boomanjin and Lake Birrabeen which I think is a lot nicer than Lake McKenzie. Lake Boomanjin is in a dog cage which may not appeal to some, though it does have flush toilets and cold showers.
