Hey all,

Can anyone tell me what's involved with transferring registration on a vehicle from QLD to VIC?

I'm looking at a car in QLD that has some mods done to it but it comes with a QLD safety certificate. I'm wondering if this safety cert is valid in VIC. Like if I was to buy the car, drive it back to Melbourne and call into Vic Roads on my way home and just swap the reg into my name with new Vic plates.

Or is it more likely that I will have to get a RWC in Vic before calling into Vic Roads?

I'm not concerned with insurance I just want to get it past Vic Roads.

Unless things have changed, Victoria would register with an interstate address. They wanted the money. Qld. requires a residential address in Qld. and they require documentary proof of the address. They also require proof of identity. Qld. no longer hands the sticker over the counter. It is posted to the address of record. This is the result of speed and redlight cameras. They don't like the idea of vehicles being registered in false names at false addresses. Makes the fines difficult to collect. In the past you just went in to the office, filled out the forms in any name and address you cared to use and paid your money, got the certificate and sticker. NSW used to insist that vehicles garaged in the state had to be registered there. Fines applied. A place I worked for once had all vehicles registered in Qld. but had reps. and servicemen in NSW down as far as Armidale and Coffs Harbour. A couple of them were fined by zealous wallopers who noticed the out-of-state car permanently based in NSW. The company didn't give a s--t.
