    Defender Hot Rod

Did anyone see the Defender that the army's using as a promo down at Can('t)berra Summer Nats? 6X6 (Perentie) with a blown V8 and what looked to be about 22" wheels on the front.
    Your tax dollars at work....
I never heard of anyone getting so stoned they had to go home and beat up their missus (just a thought)

    Here 'tis from Sunday:

It did a few laps of the cruise circuit in the morning then was on the Army display for the rest of the day. I'm positive it had the big wheels all round when it was cruising but they weren't fitted on the display stand.
It does look rather bland in it's new colour scheme......maybe it's destined for Iraq.

The little Series drag Land Rover was also there but I only saw (and heard !!) it cruise by once.

They changed the colour as part of the promo with the Abrams tanks. I was supposed to match them.

    NBZZZT.. wrong..

they changed the colour cause it caught fire during a trial burnout after the thing ate its gearbox... (the tx oil overflow was positioned to dump oil onto the thermal insulation of the exhaust)

the project changed hands and the new boss didnt like the old paint sceme... the new paint sceme was to be more "military" and since the colour of the day is desert cam... RC has it that the abrhams are to be repainted into the current cam of the leopard.

Ive had a hand on the cassowary (flightless bird) and if you get up close and personal with it its a screaming cluster....

I kept getting told (cause Im a rover nut) It is NOT a Landrover, It IS A precision engineered Burnout vehicle. to which I would reply

No it IS a landrover.. IT leaks oil, doesnt idle properly, eats transmission, burns a horrendous amount of fuel for the ground it covers, has electrical problems, is noisey on the inside, blows smoke and spends more time up on stands than it does driving. at this point all the landcruiser drivers procced to point out that yes its a landrover allright.

that nice looking landrover to date has cost you the tax payer in excess of $1.5million plus who knows how much more for the manhours that the mechanics put in on it, the personell who have the responsability of looking after its logistics, the cost of moving the thing around...

and they got all ****ty with me when i did a longer better burn out in bug 2.0 (2.25 diesel swb) when they were doing the grass training for the drivers...

Light it up for more than a minute at a time and the auto cooks light it up for more than 3 minutes in 5 and the donk blows a gasket from overheating...

bug just sat ther going roundy roundy roundy on the wet grass in 2 hi till I got bored.

I departed the project before the fire that demanded the rebuild because of the new testing mentality "run it hard till something brakes then replace that because then it wont break when we use it on the track"

Oh the people who run that project, the same people who are responsable for training the ARMY mechanics...

oh armygeddon is the team name for (assuming they ever get it past scrutineering) the guys who drive it and the cars name is cassowary.

Its an ex perentine 6x6 not a defender and about the only thing left on it that is landrover is the front bodywork and a couple of feet of chassis..

I'll get the officail specs for anyone interested from work as well as the promo stuff if you want it. I still have my team hat and beer cooler from when i was monkeying on it.

In the afternoon it got out for the burnouts.
