You should have seen the old goat track that followed the cliff face. The brave were using it the first time I went to Fraser in the early '80's.

It was really dangerous and many vehicles ended up in the surf.

What you have these days is a breeze when compared with 25 years ago. It was a real mission to even drive to middle rock as there were no boards then. I will admit that if you encounter a 4x4 towing a 20 foot boat on the current track it is annoying.

Rosco the non-affiliated (independent) one is the Mantaray. The price for both is the same. You can buy tickets for the Mantaray at the the tourist info in the Shell, or just buy them when you get on the barge itself. I think they can even do cards on the barge.

inc, what did you go and do that for? Now all those Mexicans will be fuelling up for a trip up here.

Then they will see our cheaper rego, rents, houses, fuel ect. and come in droves.

Well I have been on that track in a Studebaker 6x6.
First time I went was by plane to Orchid beach in 1974.
They had two Studes, to take guests down to Champagne pools. One had DUKW wheels so was able to tow the other up the hill.
I also remember having about 5 goes at the hill in my Toyota. It was a big hill.
That was even before the Cyclone that washed away Orchid Beach's pool. Ah the memories.

Thanks mate. Not sure where we'll be staying at this point, just somewhere along the East coast with water handy. Don't really have any preferences. I used to go there quite a lot back in the late 70's early 80's but gave it up when the yobbos started to appear in droves. Was there 4 years ago which was the first time in ages. First went there in 1960 .... when I was 12 ... :eek::D

I loved the place but the "Tour busses only" stuff did p1ss me off after a while...

We've been to Fraser Island twice now. The first time was on a tour bus because we didn't have a 4x4 and the second time was in the Disco. On both occasions we went around Christmas and it was okay, although the second time Hervey Bay was full of young mouthbreathers in riceburners and bogan Commodores.

The one and only annoyance that we endured on the island was a Nissan X-Trail with road tyres getting stuck uphill on the inland track that takes you to Dilli Village. This caused quite a jam.

No doubt more and more softroaders are making their way to such places, only to come unstuck.

Don't you mean STUCK.
One year 1980? I went in a VW type 3 wagon with raised suspension and wide wheels.
I used to camp on the dune where the dunnys are now at Ely creek., right at the entrance to the beach.
Used to take the FJ40 onto the dune.
Took a runup with the Vdub, and bang the nose dug into the dune, and the roof rack flew intact over the front of the car and landed on the dune.
When it rained I was able to go to central station and Lake Mackenzie in the Vdub.
Only time I ever got stuck was at Eurong petrol pump, where all the macho men in ther 4x4s used to wheel spin to show off. A busload of pensioners came along and about 6 old ladies pushed me.
I also had to help people in FJ75s out of bogs and a dumbo in a CJ6 who got hung up at both ends crossing the creek..Inter alia .
