Rocky is the first large city going north,,
    30-40 mins to get through,
no ring roads or alphabet loops,
    no tolls either

IF I was moving north,, (now theres an idea)

    probably Mackay,, cooler than Rocky.

Both Townsville and Cairns are tropical,, AC 24/7 or die. (Hi Timmo!!)

on their favourite chairs with the caption--

"If you stay around long enough-
    you come back into fashion"

    and whats WRONG with flairs???

Hmmm... i haven't read the whole thing, but you do know Rocky is a complete and utter INFERNO in summer? I've been there a few times, and each time it has re-defined my understanding of hot. Last time it nearly killed my dog with heat exhaustion, and we had the AC on I'm telling you .... a defender A/C is NOT Rocky spec.

The only other thing I can add is apparently housing in townsville is really expensive

All the utlities are recruiting, ergon are doing a big push but powerlink and CS Energy are also looking for people, but if you have HV and transmission experience there is also plenty of mine work with lots of options for FIFO from civilised locations or mine town living which gives you a lot of choice.

Townsville is big these days, the Armys move north helped alot and housing boomed, lots of new estates.

Rocky is Rocky, depends on what you like and are after, everyone is different, but I was up there last month and it seems to be going ahead now in leaps and bounds.

Toowoomba is bloody freezing half the year and can be bloody hot, sometimes in the same day. Official temperature last year whilst I was at the swap meet was 41.2. Rocky is bloody hot, so is Townsville. Townsville is not so much a country dump anymore, more a small city. Rocky is improving but seems to have missed boom times. Of the three, I would choose to live on the coast near Rocky, say Yeppoon or near. Bundaberg and Maryborough are better choices.

It's interesting to watch, from my mud hut, a myth being created, as I sit here in my kaftan... and consider the weather and the now failed clothes dryer... and the swathe of political advertising being booked into my news paper.

(anyone know about electronically controlled dryers?)

The answer to this initial question is to move as close as possible to where the work is - given 12 hour shifts are not abnormal in those industries. Commuting is a waste of time.

I travel between Townsvillage and Rocky reg I wouldn't touch rocky as it is the worst place in queensland tonsville not to bad mackay is allright but cant get accomadation and house prices are over the top. Should look at Harveybay area close enough to Brisvagas and far enough away. That would be my choise, and will be going to as soon as i leave the ****hole of Charlies Trousers (charterstowers)
