watching this with interest - after last weekend's high temps we are thinking about upgrading from our 2 fans and one useless portable evap cooler.-
but aircon is not as pc as evap cooling these days am I right ? i know our beloved govt. was asking everyone to reduce use of aircons in the big blackout a few weeks ago but they dint specifically mention evap cooling. oops is ths stealing the thread ...sorry
Evaporative cooling uses about a 10th of the electricity that refrigerated air con, if not more, and the water use is minimal, plus you can/should re-use the waste water from the evap cooler for the garden, car wash etc.,Quote:

JD is right again!, cooling from an evaporative unit, is totally dependent on relative humidity. The ratio of water vapour the air, at a certain temperature, the atmosphere can hold, prior to condensing, against the amount of water vapour in the air, temperature dependent, at the time. So in a humid atmosphere, ie Darwin, Cairns, etc, during the Wet, this type of unit is useless. Might be OK in Perth, check it out on the BOM site.:)

Guys, I have read that evaporative cooling may not be used in Period 4 drought water restrictions! FYI.
