The thing that always amazed me was the amount of people that tried to operate them as a Refrig. AC & ran them with the doors & windows closed.
Result................... high humidity & no cooling.:mad: Give them plenty of free area to exhaust from & on a reasonable day they worked fine here.
Spot on 4bee, you need to have a few windows open with evap cooling to work properly.
Evaporative Cooling:
Evaporative cooling relies on significant amounts of air movement to work. Try not to obstruct air movement, particularly near supply and relief grilles. You may also need to open your window to assist the evaporative cooling (if in doubt check with your building manager).

It advises in the owners manual to have the windows open a few inches...

I am extremely happy with ours, the trick is to open a few windows and that practically eliminates the moisure issue, sorry Joel, but 4bee is spot on.:eek:
THE BIG PROBLEM is water consumption, I run ours on tank water when possible ( we are on mains), but also other things like loo's, so I could never be certain of its usage, but the other hot day -Saturday? the family was out and I was working on the Landie in the garage ( funny 'bout that) where the pressure pump is, and I reckon it was cutting in every 15 min for a min or so. It turns out my 10 year old left the air cooler on high. Looking at the level guage we went thru 250-300 litres that arvo.
I also have rigged up tubing so that when it "self flushes" the excess water returns to the tanks so the water was all consumed thru the cooler.:( :(
Just read the operating instructions for mine.
It flushes/dumps every 5 hours of operation, refill quantity 20 ltrs.
So during a 24 hour day - well lets use 25 the maths are easier - it would pump in 100 ltrs, however my esitimate, as I dump the water back into the tank - I loose 5 ltrs per dump. - so about 25 ltrs for a day.
Mind you this is electonically controlled, the older mechanical ones may be less water 'efficient'
We had evaporative aircon in our place in Mt Isa. It was the ducks guts - it felt more 'natural' than refridgerated aircon. Better still, because it operates better with the windows open the house stays 'fresher'. Also, you do not get that horrible 'drying out' feeling in your nose and throat whilst you sleep that you can get from the dehumidifying effect of refridgerated aircon.
I would not hesitate to have ducted evap aircon again in a dry climate.
