You will find limited 4wding on Litchfield except for the path to Sandy Creek Falls and Lost City however there is some good scenery. I'd suggest Litchfield more than Kakadu as its closer and more places to swim.

IMHO opinion both are good - but different. Used to live in Darwin, found Litchfield easier to get to, but Kakadu has its own grandeur. (and , I think, better indigenous sites. Some of the art in Kakadu is awesome).

It's alright I believe the croc's in Kakadu have developed a taste for backpackers in the last few years.

Can't think of why you would swim in most of Kakadu.

Twin falls used to be netted off and patrolled for croc's. Great place to snorkel as the fish life is amazing in the deep river holes.

Do not for a minute believe that there are not crocs in most streams north of Mataranka. Unless you are in a rockpool up an escarpment, snapping handbags are everywhere, do not assume just because others have swam there that it is safe.

I think we need a sarcasm smilie

Yes, you are correct. In general up here the rules are:

If you can't see the bottom, all the banks and what's up and down stream... don't get in. There are some fantastic fresh water swimming spots though and Litchfield is considered great for swimming.

Never gut your fish at the waters edge or boat ramp and when fishing close to the bank keep an eye out.

The other saying up here for swimming is:
Send in the dog, if it survives send in the kids... then you know its safe

Running into one of them might be a bit more than the bullbar will cope with
