    2 Way Radio

Id like to get a hand held 2 way that I can car charge.

Does any one have experience with a good hand held radio that has decent range, good battery life and clear crisp sound.

I just want a good all round radio to keep in contact with other the vehicles in the vicinity but one that I can tuck away in the glove box when not in use.

    Please advise

    Hi
I got a cheapie from Dick Smiths for $25 it's pretty good for short range, maybe a couple of k's.
Depends on what you have to spend thought really. The cheapie's are about 0.5w of power the more expensive ones go up to 5w, as much as a standard radio. But still less reception due to shorter antenna.
IMO ........Save yourself $175 and get a cheapie.

I use rechargable batts and take two sets, they last all day but they are ni-cads, go for any lithium based batts and prob get all day from one set.

Some handhelds plug into 12v power to charge or you can just get a 12v plug in batter charger.

Get one with a vox function and mic though, save you having to key mic all the time. Handy sometimes.

I have been reading good things about Qunangsheng (sp) radio's from Ebay. The better models can switch between .5 and 5w.
I think they can be charged in the car, but you would need to find an adaptor seperatley.
They can also be hacked so that you can listen to other frequencies.

I use a cheapie and rechargables. Used to have a charger you could plug into the cigarete lighter for the batteries but lost it.

Same as George, work fine for the purpose - just keep kids clear of them - language can be foul at times....on a long trip we listened to the truckies... for about a minute, not impressed........
