Remember one of the best features of the RR is the self levelling suspension. Personally I have had few problems with my P38.
Hi All,
Not sure if this should be General or Technical but we will start here.
A friend is looking at a 4wd to tow a 21-22ft Caravan. They are looking at either a RR or Landcruiser. The RR they have been looking at is a 2001 P38A 4.6 HSE. The Van they are looking at apparently has a tow ball weight of about 200kg. Can anyone tell me the tow capacity of the P38A including ball weight? Also, what should they be looking at when considering a P38A? i.e. mechanical, electrical etc. I know i have read plenty about people having issues with the P38 but cannot remember the specifics.
Appreciate your help.

My folks used to use a 4.6 HSE to tow their big caravan (not sure of the length). Expect fuel consumption to be up to 30+ litres per hundred...![]()
My normal consumption 4.6 HSE on a highway run, no trailer 13.5 L/100km.
Syd - Bris with 1.5t boat trailer 17.5 L/100km. All sitting on the speed limits.
The 2001 P38's from my knowlwdge seemed to be a much better example than the earlier models. A bloke in the Rangie club's got a 2000 Model HSE and bar a dodgy AFM< or sensor (not ure what system they have in that model), it's been trouble-free. Been across the Simpson and all around the place without any hiccups![]()
Dad's got a 98 4.0 with 190K on the clock. In the 2 1/2 years he's owned it, the suspension and the HVAC system have been the biggest areas of expediture (all up about $6K), but wouldn't trade it for the world![]()
Unless it was a 2001 Rangie like you're describing.

Tell him to get a deisel cruiser if hes pulling something. I love Range Rovers but will never go near a P38. My dad has had one for nearly 5 years now and never ending problems..
PM me if you want the list.. be a few pages worth![]()

Thanks Everyone. We looked up towbar specs and the RR is 250kg, LC is 350kg. I think this alone may sway them.
Yeah for sure. My dad is just about to get a 22 foot 4x4 caravan and hes not considering using the HSE for towing that up the cape..all talk is of a turbo diesel cruiserThanks Everyone. We looked up towbar specs and the RR is 250kg, LC is 350kg. I think this alone may sway them.but realistic I guess.

Why not a diesel disco ? You see heaos of vans being towed by these and you can get some super nice ones. Fuel economy should be much better than the petrol alternative, meaning range between fills is greater too.
(I take it a Defender is a bit too agricultural for his tastes)
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".
